Rams Disappointed, Not Discouraged

No. 11 BYU hands Rams first loss
For two weeks, the team could withstand the good with the bad.

Four turnovers a game helped make up for offenses hitting big plays with too much regularity against the Colorado State defense. It didn't hurt when the offense was hitting explosives and scoring with great regularity.

Not all of those things combined on Saturday at Canvas Stadium. A sold-out crowd came in hopes of seeing an upset, but No. 11 BYU took the wind out of the facility with 21 first-quarter points on thee way to a 41-23 victory.

What Jim Mora stressed to his football team is not all is lost. It was one game, against a very talented football team. More challenges await if the Rams are willing to face them.

"It's up to us whether or not it defines our season. You have to attack the next challenge with the same vigor," Mora said. "You attack this challenge. It just didn't work out for us tonight, you know?

"So we have to go back to work, and we have to maintain the same standard. The standard never changes, whether you're behind or ahead. The standard can't change and we won't let it change. The feeling I get from our players in the locker room is they're disappointed, but they're not discouraged, because they did stick together. They did stay connected. They did continue to compete. They did continue to cheer each other on. You know, there was no, there was no cracks."

BYU scored two touchdowns on its first five offensive plays, each quick-strike score fueled by an explosive play. The Cougars had 12 in all, building a 21-0 lead on three scoring runs by LJ Martin, who rushed for 176 yards.

Their stars did shine. Bear Bachmeier threw for 227 yards, Legend Glasker finished with 131 receiving yards and the Cougars had 559 yards of offense, 332 rushing.

Only one of their scoring drives covered 10 plays because yards were coming in chunks.

"I just think a lack of communication, just lack of execution, and those are things you can clean up for sure," CJ Blocker said. "That just comes with practice, how we prepare. So I think it's definitely a lot of things and, we've just got to clean those up, and that starts at practice."

CSU scored on its first possession, a quick answer when Hauss Hejny hit RJ Vick on a 7-yard scoring pass, threading a tight window to the back of the end zone. It was his 10th touchdown pass of the season, but two drives later, he exited the game with a hamstring injury.

K'saan Farrar entered and ended up throwing a career-best 23 passes, completing 13 for 70 yards. He was leading a potential scoring drive at the end of the first half when he was intercepted, and he was guiding another in the fourth when he took a finger to the eye.

Darius Curry came in and finished the drive, with Durell Robinson punching it in from the 1. Curry came back with another scoring drive, hitting Nader Chirchi on a 1-yard pass, Chirchi's first scoring reception. Both times the Rams went for 2, both times they converted with Curry connecting with Jackson Harper and Tommy Maher for the extra aid.

All of it, and the fact BYU was held to 10 second-half points, was a sign to Mora. He said the team was disappointed, not discouraged.

The distinction between the two words is important.

"I think that's really important because it's only week three. We've got a lot of games to play," Blocker said. "We've got to go into next week with our heads up high and keep working and just keep building."

Blocker has built a three-game streak with an interception, the first Ram to do so since Jack Howell in 2022. D'Angelo Hagans Jr., had one on the next BYU drive, pushing the unit to 10 takeaways.

Like I said, there's a lot of clues that I see that tell me that we're going to be a successful football team, a very successful football program."
