Tim Shelton joined the Colorado State men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in June of 2023. The former San Diego State Aztec player came to Fort Collins after spending a season at Oregon State.

In his first two years he has been apart of a staff that saw the program reach its highest ranking ever in 2023-24, and for the first time in program history win an NCAA Tournament game in back-to-back years.

In his lone season at Oregon State, he coached one of the youngest teams in the nation. In doing so Jordan Pope earned Pac 12 All-Freshman team honors.

Shelton has plenty of knowledge about the Mountain West, spending four years on staff at Fresno State plus six on staff at San Diego State on top of his four years as a player at SDSU.

At Fresno State, Shelton was the team’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He helped lead the team to two 23-win campaigns. Along with being named an Under Armour 30-under-30 honoree by the National Association of Basketball (NABC) in 2018.

Following his player career at San Diego State, he joined the staff as a graduate manager before moving into the roles of director of player development (2013-17) and assistant coach (2017-18). While on staff with the Aztecs he helped the team advance to four NCAA Tournaments, including the 2014 Sweet 16 and one NIT appearance advancing to the semifinals that season.

In his 11 years at San Diego State as a player and member of the staff he helped win 281 games, earn seven Mountain West titles and advance to 10 postseason tournaments, including seven NCAA Tournaments.

As a player, he was a Mountain West All-Defensive Team honoree as a senior.  He comes from a pedigree of basketball with his dad, Lonnie, winning an NBA Championship with the Seattle Supersonics in 1979 after playing for Oregon State in college.

Shelton earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from San Diego State in history and educational leadership, respectively.
