Michael Wilson joined the Colorado State men's golf program as its head coach on August 5, 2022.
Â
Wilson set the bar high for the CSU men's golf program in his first season. He led the Rams back to the NCAA Championship for the first time in 12 years. CSU finished 28th at the championship after earning the trip by finishing fifth at the NCAA Auburn Region. In that regional, Christoph Bleier became the first Ram to ever win individual medalist at an NCAA Championship or Regional.Â
The year started with a bang for the Rams as well as they won the team title at the first three tournaments they played. Connor Jones picked up individual medalist at a pair of those events as well. Jones, Bleier and Davis Bryant all earned All-Mountain West honors with Bleier also being named a GCAA Ping All-District team member. For the season, Colorado State finished in the top five nine times to match the program record also achieved in 2003-04.Â
Â
Wilson has spent five years as the head coach at Long Beach State before coming to Fort Collins. He built a program that had representation in the NCAA Regionals in each of the last two years (2021 as a team and 2022 with Tyler Schafer as an individual). In the four years of awards, with 2020 being canceled due to COVID, he has had nine first-team, three-second team and two honorable-mention All-Big West selections, along with the 2021 Player of the Year and three Big West Freshmen of the Year.
Â
In 2021, he led LBSU to its third Big West Conference title in 52 years and the program's fourth NCAA Regional appearance, earning Wilson Big West Coach of the Year honors. In that season, the Beach earned a pair of top-two finishes, four top-five performances and six top-10 showings in nine tournaments.
Â
Wilson got his start collegiately with three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Washington. While at Washington, Wilson helped the Huskies improve their finish at the Pac-12 Championships in each of his three seasons, with his last resulting in a tie for third place in 2016-17 as Wilson managed the team while head coach Alan Murray was home for the birth of his child. In each of his three seasons, Wilson helped Washington reach the NCAA Regionals, and the Huskies made an NCAA Championship appearance in 2015, tying for 15th while Cheng-Tsung Pan finished as the individual runner-up.
Â
Wilson entered coaching following three seasons on the Canadian Professional Golf Tour. He first worked as an assistant golf professional and lead instructor at Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel, Calif., and then made the move into collegiate coaching at Washington.
Â
His pro career came on the heels of a tremendous collegiate career at California. A top golfer with the Golden Bears, Wilson was the 2003 Pac-10 Co-Freshman of the Year and played a big role in Cal's 2004 NCAA National Championship. During his time at California, Wilson was the individual winner of three tournaments, a school record.
