Karim Abdel Wahab enters his eighth season as an assistant coach on the Colorado State track & field staff in 2017-18.
In his role, Abdel Wahab coaches the Rams in the sprints, hurdles and relays. In addition, he mentors CSU combined events athletes in the hurdles, and develops dual-event (sprinters/jumpers) athletes in the horizontal jumps. Abdel Wahab is also the track & field liaison for student-athlete academic success.
In 2016-17, Abdel Wahab coached Lorenda Holston to one of the top years by a women’s CSU hurdler in recent program history. Holston, who Abdel Wahab guided in her transition from a sprinter to a hurdler, broke the program record and the all-time Mountain West record in the 60-meter hurdles (8.06 on Feb. 10, 2017). She went on to earn Second-Team All-America honors during the indoor season (60-meter hurdles) and Honorable Mention All-America honors for the outdoor season (100-meter hurdles).
In addition to Holston’s record 60-meter hurdles time, the Rams set four more records in Abdel Wahab-coached events in 2016-17. Individually, Emily Romo broke CSU records in each of the indoor (53.75) and outdoor (53.55) 400 meters in 2016-17, while Leah Fair set a new record in the outdoor 200 meters (23.77). The Rams’ 4x100-meter relay team was also a record-setter during the 2017 outdoor season, taking down the previous record with a time of 44.79 at the Mountain West Championships.
From 2012-14, Abdel Wahab mentored the most decorated hurdler in the history of CSU track & field, Trevor Brown. In his senior year, Brown set all-time CSU and Mountain West records in the 60-meter hurdles (7.73) and in the 110-meter hurdles (13.55). Combined with Holston, CSU hurdlers have set the all-time Mountain West records in the 60-meter hurdles on each of the women’s and men’s sides under Abdel Wahab’s guidance.
Brown finished his career as a five-time All-American, earning outdoor accolades in the 110-meter hurdles in each of 2012 and 2013 before doubling up on the 110 and 400-meter hurdles in 2014. Brown was also an indoor All-American in 2014, earning honors in the 60-meter hurdles.
