Football (1929)
Ivan Dyekman holds the honor of becoming the first individual NCAA national champion in CSU history when he placed first in the hammer event in 1931. A Fort Collins native, Dyekman played only his junior year on the football team, but his excellence came on the track in both running and throwing events. Dyekman consistently won high-point titles at meets thanks to his ability to run, jump and throw, leading the conference meet in 1930 and 1932 for overall points. Dyekman led the track team in 1932 to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship in a season where he won the conference championships for individual points and the hammer. He also finished second in high hurdles and third in discuss in 1932, showing his versatility.Â
Dyekman went on the fight in WWII and continued his career in the military, retiring as a Colonel. He died November 1, 1973 at the age of 63.
