Tennis Preview: Utah, BYU, Wyoming

Four Match Homestand:The Colorado State women's tennis team will wrap up MWC play hosting, Utah April 11, BYU April 12, and Wyoming April 13. Matches are scheduled to start at noon, at the Colorado State Outdoor Courts at the Moby Arena Complex, weather permitting. The Rams will finish up regular season play against Denver University on April 15, in Fort Collins.
Utah: The Utah Utes are coming off a loss to San Diego State, 6-1, and carry a 4-11 overall record, and 0-5 in Mountain West Conference play. Under Coach Messick the Rams are 0-9 against the Utes. The Rams will face Utah on April 11, starting at noon. The match will be played at the Colorado State Outdoor Courts at the Moby Arena Complex.
BYU: The Cougars of BYU are currently ranked No. 45, and carry an 8-10 overall record, and 3-2 in MWC play. BYU will face Idaho State and Wyoming before taking on the Rams on April 12, starting at noon. Under Coach Messick, the Rams are 0-4 against the Cougars.
Weekly Recap: The Colorado State women?s tennis team continued Mountain West Conference play this past weekend in Colorado Springs, taking on Air Force and New Mexico. The No. 49-ranked Lobos defeated the Rams, 6-1, while Colorado State defeated the Falcons, 4-3. The Rams also played a non-conference match against New Mexico State, defeating the Aggies, 5-2. The Rams move to a 6-7 overall record, and 1-3 in MWC play.
Singles: In singles action, the Rams won 4-of-6 matches against Air Force, and 1-of-6 matches against New Mexico, respectively.
Air Force: After losing the doubles point, the Rams bounced back winning four singles matches. Lone senior Sanja Hansson led the way at the No. 1 position, defeating Laura Nigro in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Hansson moves to 9-4 in dual match play, and 21-6 overall. Dasha Zhurin, Carla Pallares, and Tatyana Ugorich also had wins for the Rams. Pallares defeated Kelli O?Bryant 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. She has now won four out of her last six matches, and carries a 9-4 dual match record. Coach Messick was pleased with his team?s performance. ?I was very proud of the way our team fought hard under adverse conditions and pulled it out,? Messick said. ?The team really hung together today.?
New Mexico: New Mexico won 5-of-6 singles matches in the victory. Alexandra Paganetti had the lone win for the Rams, defeating Tjasa Suvak 7-6, 3-6, 6-1. Paganetti moves to 5-8 in dual match play, and 8-14 overall. Coach Messick was pleased with Paganetti?s play against a tough New Mexico team. ?Alexandra Paganetti at the No. 3 singles had a great win against the No. 10-ranked player in the central region,? Messick said. Dasha Zhurin had a tough three-set loss to No. 82-ranked Sandy Lukowski, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Doubles: In doubles action, the Rams continued to struggle, going 0-3 against New Mexico, and winning 1-of-3 against Air Force, respectively.
Air Force: The team of Jessica Jones and Alexandra Paganetti at the No. 3 position had the lone win for the Rams, defeating O?Bryant/Nigro, 8-3. The duo is now 4-8 in dual matches, and 8-9 overall. ?This was a tough match for us. Air Force is always tough at their place, with the fast courts and the altitude,? Messick said.
New Mexico: New Mexico swept all three matches to earn the doubles point. The team of Jones/Paganetti had the closest match for the Rams, falling to Heidbrink/Robertson, 8-6.
New Mexico State: The Rams defeated a strong New Mexico State team 5-2 last Friday at the Miramont Sport Center. The Rams fell behind early, losing the doubles point. New Mexico State won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles 8-4. The team of Dasha Zhurin and Sanja Hansson, defeated Mignot/Hodge, 8-4. Colorado State won 5-of-6 singles matches in the victory. Half of the matches went to third and deciding sets. Hansson defeated Veerman 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Dasha Zhurin also won, defeating Porobic 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Under Coach Messick, the Rams are now 2-8 against New Mexico State.

The four match homestand for the Rams will be played at the Colorado State Outdoor Courts at the Moby Arena Complex, weather permitting.
The Mountain West Conference Championships begin April 24-26, in San Diego, California.
The Rams are currently ranked No. 6 in the MWC standings. San Diego State is No. 1 with a 6-1 conference record.
The Mountain West Conference has four schools currently ranked in the top 100: No. 26 UNLV, No. 31 San Diego State, No. 52 New Mexico, and No. 45 BYU.
Sanja Hansson is now 30-21 (.588) in her career at the No. 1 position.
Dasha Zhurin is 13-3 (.812) for her career at the No. 2 position.
Starting April 11, the Rams will have four straight home matches to finish out the regular season. Colorado State will face: Utah April 11, BYU April 12, Wyoming April 13, and Denver University April 15.
