Women's Basketball Defeats Loyola Marymount

A stingy defense in the second half allowed the Colorado State women?s basketball team to defeat Loyola Marymount this afternoon in the Pepsi Center, 54-42 in the first game of a doubleheader with the Colorado State basketball teams. The Rams improve to 7-4 on the year, while the Lions fall to 9-4.
Loyola Marymount scored just 14 points in the second half on four field goals, while the Rams scored 27 points on 10 shots from the field for the 12-point victory.
Colorado State was led by sophomore guard Vanessa Espinoza who tied her career-high with 16 points and senior Joy Jenkins with 13 points. Sophomore center Lindsay Thomas led the Rams with nine rebounds and senior guard Jasai Ferrucho led all players with four assists. Espinoza also led all players with three steals in the game. The Rams were just 2-of-11 from the three-point line, with both makes coming from Espinoza and did not make one in the second half (0-6).
Loyola Marymount was led by Kate Murray with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Adrianne Slaughter led all players with 12 boards. Bianca Ziemann led the Lions with three assists and she was one of three players with two steals. The Lions made three triples in the game and won the rebounding contest, 48-47.
?Our defense is really what won this game,? said Colorado State head coach Chris Denker. ?Our post defense was solid today. Melissa Dennett, Lindsay Thomas and Joy Jenkins did a great job on Slaughter and Murray, who were a combined seven for 30 from the field. At this point, we?ll take a win any way we can get it.?
Freshman center Marilyn Moulton scored a career-high three points, all coming on the same play for the Rams. With 12.7 seconds remaining in the first half, Moulton was fouled on a made layup and made her free throw, marking the only traditional three-point play of the game for the Rams (1-3).
Colorado State returns to Moby Arena for a non-conference contest against the Montana Lady Griz on Tuesday, Jan. 6. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. The Rams then close out the non-conference schedule against IPFW on Friday -- a game that also will start at 7:00 p.m.
