Defense Again Leads Women's Basketball To Victory

1/6/2004 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Defense was again the name of the game for the Colorado State women?s basketball team as they defeated the University of Montana, 60-45 tonight in Moby Arena. It marks the second straight contest the Rams have held an opponent below 50 points. With the victory, Colorado State moves to 8-4 on the season, while Montana falls to 10-4.

Sophomore center Lindsay Thomas recorded her third double-double in four games, scoring a career-high 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds -- including six offensive -- on the night. Also in double figures in scoring were sophomore guard Vanessa Espinoza with 12 and senior guard Jasai Ferrucho with 10 points. Ferrucho also led the Rams with five assists, while Thomas had two blocks and she, Espinoza and senior forward Joy Jenkins each recorded two steals.

?I was real pleased with the second half,? said head coach Chris Denker. ?The first half was kind of slow, kind of sluggish and kind of quiet. Anytime you hold a team to 45 points, especially a team the caliber of Montana, you?re going to win a lot of ballgames.?

Montana was led by senior forward Julie Deming with 12 points and center Hollie Tyler with 10 points. Forward Jody McLeod had a team-best seven rebounds and senior guard Brooklynn Lorenzen added six assists.

Colorado State committed a season-low eight fouls and out-rebounded the Lady Griz 40-31.

?Montana usually outrebounds people and we won that contest 40-31,? continued Denker. ?LT (Lindsay Thomas) was huge tonight with six offensive rebounds and some key defensive rebounds. Rebounding is very big for us.?

Colorado State returns to the hardwood on Friday evening against IPFW in its final non-conference game of the season. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. The Rams then begin conference action on Jan. 15 against BYU.
