After scoring just three points in the first six minutes of the game and falling 13-3, the Colorado State women?s basketball team rebounded to defeat San Diego State, 65-56 in front of 1,485 fans in Moby Arena. The Rams improve to 14-9 overall and 5-5 in Mountain West Conference action, while the Aztecs fall to 7-15 overall and 2-7 in league play.
Colorado State was led by sophomore guard Vanessa Espinoza with 16 points, while sophomore center Lindsay Thomas added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds and sophomore forward Melissa Dennett chipped in 11 points in the win. Senior guard Jasai Ferrucho also tallied a game-high eight assists and Dennett had two blocked shots.
?Any win is a good win,? said Head Coach Chris Denker. ?These guys (San Diego State) play very different from anyone else -- a lot like the Air Force men -- and we had to make a mental adjustment this week in practice. Annika Walseth was real solid and Kylee O?Dwyer --though she couldn?t get a shot to go down -- was very good tonight.?
San Diego State was led by freshman guard Courtney Fritz with 18 points and five rebounds, while freshman guard Michelle Elliott chipped in 15 points and sophomore Michelle Strawberry added 11 points. Fritz nailed four three-pointers in the game, three in succession early in the first-half to give the Aztecs the 13-3 lead, but the Rams held her scoreless the remainder of the half.
After trailing by 10, the Rams went on a 14-1 run, holding the Aztecs without a field goal for 10:30 to retake the lead, 17-14. There was seven lead changes in the first half with the Rams holding on to a 24-23 advantage at the break.
Colorado State will face UNLV on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Moby Arena. The Rebels defeated the Rams earlier this year, 92-87 in Las Vegas.
