Multi-Eventers Get Off To Fast Start

The Colorado State heptathletes and decathletes got off to a great start at the Schiemenz Heptathlon-Bennett Decathlon in Greeley today. Freshman Kevin Johnson leads the decathlon with a first-day point total of 3552, while junior Cristina Gourdin is second and first among collegians with 3123 points. Freshmen Katie Lloyd and Tonya Cure are currently in fourth and fifth, respectively in the heptathlon. Junior Loree Smith, competing at the Clyde Littlefield Relays in Austin, Texas, also had a great day.

Johnson finished third in the 100 meters with a time of 11.20 to open the meet. He then won the long jump with a leap of 21-11.5 and finished second in the shot put with a throw of 38-10.25. He also finished second in the high jump after clearing 5-10.75 -- to qualify for the NCAA regional meet -- and ended the day by placing third in the 400 meters with a time of 50.97.

Gourdin started the day finishing fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.30. She then won the high jump after clearing 5-8 -- which also qualifies her for the NCAA regional meet -- and then placed third in the shot put with a toss of 35-0.25. Gourdin ended the day by running a 25.33 in the 200 meters to finish second.

Lloyd was third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.11 and then cleared 5-1.75 in the high jump to finish fifth. She won the shot put with a throw of 37-9.25 and then placed seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 26.72.

Cure ran the 100 hurdles in 16.22 to finish eighth. In the high jump, she cleared 5-3 which was good for fourth place and then had a throw of 27-9.25 to place 10th. In the final event of the day, the 200 meters, Cure ran a 26.25 to finish fourth.

The quartet will conclude competition tomorrow and the rest of the team will join them for the Tom Benich Classic on Saturday which is also hosted by the University of Northern Colorado.

Smith again won the hammer throw event, for the second week in a row, this time posting a best throw of 220-0 to break the stadium record. Smith currently has the second best throw among Division I athletes this season. She will compete in the discus throw on Friday afternoon and senior John Woods will compete in the 100 meters on Friday morning.
