4/14/2004 12:00:00 AM | Indoor Track & Field

Heading For Husker-land: The Colorado State track & field team will be in Lincoln, Neb., for the Nebraska Quadrangular on Saturday. For the first time in recent history, CSU will not send anyone to the annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Weather Gets In The Way: The Rams did not compete last weekend after a snow storm cancelled the Ram Invitational.

Two In A Row: Junior Loree Smith broke both the Mountain West and Colorado State hammer records for the second week in a row after winning the Texas Relays on April 2. She also broke the stadium record at Texas with her throw of 220-0, which ranks her number one in the nation. Smith was named the Mountain West Women?s Track & Field Athlete for the second straight week and she has now won the award three times during outdoor season and once during indoor. In the first week of the season, she established both records with her throw of 214-8 at the Stanford Invitational.

Another Record Falls: Freshman Magnus Lohse broke the Colorado State record in the shot put at the Rob Upton Invitational. In his first outdoor collegiate event, Lohse threw 60-7.25 to break the old record of 58-8.5 held by both Tony Sotelo in 1999 and senior Jeremy Graff from 2002. His throw also ranks as the fourth best in Mountain West history and is currently ninth in the nation and third in the Midwest Region.

Nationally Ranked: The Colorado State women?s team is currently tied for 24th in the Trackwire 25 poll. The Rams have 10 points and are tied with Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and North Carolina State.

Oh So Close: In the Schiemenz Heptathlon hosted by UNC, junior Cristina Gourdin won with an NCAA provisional qualifying total of 5,136 points. She missed the school record by 25 points, 5,160 points held by assistant coach Lindsey Malmgren. Freshman Katie Lloyd finished in second place with 4,875 points and freshman Tonya Cure was fourth with 4,537 points. Freshman Kevin Johnson placed third in the Bennett Decathlon, totaling 6,091 points.

Tom Benich Recap: Freshman Janay DeLoach won the 100 meters in a time of 12.32, while freshman Megan Fox was right behind her in second at 12.38. Danielle Korb and Katie Yemm took the top two spots in the 1500 meters, with Korb qualifying for NCAA Regionals with her time of 4:32.45. Katrice Thomas and Yemm were second and third, respectively, in the 400 meters. The women?s 4x100 meter relay team was also victorious, running a 47.16. Senior Keela Niemeyer won the shot put at 49-7.75, qualifying for NCAA regionals and Katie Hansen also won the discus, with her throw of 164-8, which qualifies her for NCAA regionals.
