Ram Men, Women Second in MWC Outdoor Championship

The Colorado State women?s discus throwers finished 1-2-4 while MWC record holder Lorre Smith recorded a first-place throw of 172 feet, 2 inches to highlight CSU?s Friday?s events in the 2004 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track Championships in Las Vegas.

CSU?s men?s distance team made a strong showing with junior Mike Nicks finishing third in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:59.89, just .29 seconds behind the winner, Matthew Adams of BYU. The Rams captured three of the top five spots in the 10,000-meter run highlighted by Josh Glaab?s second-place finish with a time of 30:26.61.

In the field events, CSU long jumper Jacob Benson finished third with a 23-3 1/4 leap while a Ram quintet led by a James Cale third-place showing (169-4) finished 3-4-5-6-7 in the discus.

In the field for the women, Christine Ahn turned in a third-place finish in the pole vault hitting 12-3 1/2 as Janay DeLoach long jumped 19-10 1/4 for second place in the event. CSU discus thorwers Loree Smith (172-2), Katie Hansen (161-11) and Keela Niemeyer (157-10) tacked on a total of 23 points to the Rams? team score during the day, as well.

Both the CSU men and women trail BYU in the team standings with the Cougars holding a 93-59 advantage on the men?s side and a 93-53 lead on the women?s.

The meet concludes on Saturday with finals in both running and field events.
