Let us take you back 21 years ago to Oct. 1, 1983. The Colorado State Rams played against the Utah Utes in an intense football rivalry. The Utes had always been a tough competitor for the Rams and this game was no exception. The Utes scored on their opening drive of the game and the first quarter ended with the Rams being shut out 7-0. But the tide would soon be turning.
While the Utes managed to churn out another touchdown at the start of the second quarter, the Rams were quick to strike back with two touchdowns before the period wrapped up. Terry Nugent scored the first touchdown on a quarterback sneak and threw the second to tight end Keli McGregor. After missing the first PAT, Nugent threw to tight end Harper LeBel for a two-point conversion. The game was tied going into halftime and the second half of the game would prove which team had the determination to bring in the win.
The Rams drew first blood in the second half with a field goal by kicker Jon Poole in the middle of the third quarter but the Utes were not about to give up just yet. They struck back with a touchdown making the score 21-17 with another quarter to play.
Again the Rams scored early, this time with a touchdown thrown by Nugent to wide receiver Ron Jenkins. The Utes battled back and scored a touchdown making the score 28-24. This would be the last time the Rams defense would allow the Utes to score. The weary Utes could not contain the Rams and, with 3:34 left to play, the Rams scored their final touchdown with Nugent?s handoff to half back Steve Bartalo. This 31-28 win brought the Rams their first victory of the 1983 season.
