Throwers Break Multiple Records

The Colorado State track and field teams were in Laramie for the Robert Shine Invitational where the men won with 116 points and the women were victorious with 131 points, both defeating Air Force and Wyoming.
Senior Loree Smith had a career day, winning the weight throw with a Colorado State school record, Mountain West Conference record and War Memorial Fieldhouse record of 71-2.5, breaking her previous school record of 70-8 from last week. She breaks the fieldhouse record of 70-2.5 held by Wyoming?s Robin Lyons in 2000 and she also breaks Lyons Mountain West record of 70-11.25 from the 2000 Championship. Smith also won the shot put with an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 53-3.5, missing the school record by just five inches.
Sophomore Magnus Lohse won the men?s shot put with a Colorado State school record, NCAA automatic qualifying mark and fieldhouse record with a toss of 65-8.75. He breaks the school record of 63-2 that he set as a freshman in 2004 and breaks the fieldhouse record of 65-6.5, held by four-time World Champion (three outdoor, one indoor) John Godina from 1994 when Godina competed for UCLA. Lohse?s throw is also the second best in Mountain West school history, behind the record of 66-10 held by Jim Roberts of BYU.
Sophomore Janay DeLoach won the 55 meters with a time of 6.97, missing the NCAA provisional qualifying time by just .01. She also won the long jump at 19-3.75, while junior Amanda Huddleston was second in the long jump and won the triple jump with a school record leap of 40-9.75, breaking the record of 40-4.75 she set last week.
Junior Becky Hammitt won the 800 meters with a fieldhouse record time of 2:14.60, breaking the old record of 2:16.99 held by Deby Anderson from Wyoming in 1993. Sophomore Danielle Korb finished second behind Hammitt, also coming in under the fieldhouse record at 2:16.55.
Senior Michelle Carman and freshman Heather Loseke swept the top two spots in the mile to start the events on the track this afternoon. Sophomore Katie Lloyd finished in a tie for second in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.26 and sophomore Megan Fox won the 200 meters, clocking in 25.86. A trio of Ram freshman swept the top three spots in the 3000 meters, with Kirsten Anthony running a 10:58.14 and Melissa Thomas and Katie Sammons finishing right behind her, respectively. The Rams took the top three spots in the high jump, as well, with freshman Anne McLaughlin winning after clearing 5-5. Rheannon Backes also cleared 5-5 for second and Jenny Higgason was third at 5-3. Behind Smith in the weight throw, the Rams took the next three spots, with Jill McCormick, Jaimee Troth and Katie Hansen all throwing over 55 feet. McCormick was also second in the shot put, while Sara Taylor, Troth and Hansen took the next three spots.
Senior John Woods and freshman Drew Morano ran 6.28 and 6.39, respectively to take the top two spots in the 55 meters. Senior Adam Trainor also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship, doing so in the weight throw with a second-place toss of 65-7.
Sophomore Rob Watson won the mile in 4:26.34, while junior Mike Horton won the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.52 and Brandon Kent and Dave Hoesly finished second and third, respectively in the 400 meters. Brett Melin won the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.27 and Rodnee Pope was victorious in the 200 meters with a clocking of 22.43. The Ram men also swept the top three spots in the 3000 meters, with freshman Paul Hamilton winning in 9:15.10. In the long jump, Jacob Benson, Ciarre Campbell and Kevin Johnson finished two through four, respectively and freshman Jason Smith was the top Ram finisher in the triple jump in third. Collin Ferguson, Benson and Daniel Cecchini finished second through fourth in the high jump, respectively, and Nate Heyrman was third in the shot put behind Lohse and Wyoming?s Tyg Long.
Next weekend, the Rams will take part in the Air Force Quadrangular on Saturday, along with Colorado and California. Events are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
