Smith Wins Penn Relays

On day one of a three-day split-squad weekend, the Colorado State track and field team had three athletes compete.
At the Drake Relays in Des Moines, senior Colleen Blair finished 14th in the 5000 meters, posting a personal-best time of 17:06.23, while sophomore Matt Cianciulli finished eighth in the 5000 meters, clocking in at 14:15.53 -- a personal best time and an NCAA Regional qualifying time.
Senior Loree Smith won the hammer throw at the prestigious Penn Relays, throwing 206-8 to win by over nine feet. After the end of competition, Smith was interviewed by the staff at the Penn Relays. Her interview follows:
How does it feel to win at Penn?
This is a pretty prestigious meet, one of the biggest I?ve been to this year. I?m a little disappointed that Candace fouled out.
What do you think of the Penn Relays?
This is my first time competing here and my first time visiting Philly. It?s an amazing city.
How do you feel about your performance this season?
Right now I?m not too worried about distance. I?m concentrating on technique. I competed in one meet in Colorado and this is my fourth outdoor meet. The USA Championship is my goal.
Are you looking forward to your next big competition against Scott?
My plan is always to win. My start outdoors has been a little slower. I hope to throw past the 70 meter mark and give her some competition at Nationals.
Competition will continue for the Rams tomorrow at the Drake Relays, while the majority of the team will be in Albuquerque on Saturday for the Modrall Sperling Open, hosted by the University of New Mexico.
