Rams in 4th at Thunderbird Invitational

The Colorado State men?s golf team currently resides in a tie for 4th place after the first and second rounds of the 33rd annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational. The Rams fired a six-over 574 and sit 11 strokes behind team-leader UNLV at five-under.
Senior John Hayes and Junior Kevin McAlpine both carded an opening-round 69 to help lead CSU.
Hayes had the best two-round score for the Rams, after he carded an even-par 142 placing him in a tie for 12th place. McAlpine fired a two-over 144 and currently sits in a tie for 24th.
Sophomore Derrick Whiting struggled in the first round carding a six-over 77, but found his swing in the second round with a three-under 68. Whiting is currently in a tie for 30th.
Other notables for the Rams include Nate Pettitt who carded a two-round 147 and is in a tie for 41st and Aaron Weston who fired a 149 and sits in a tie for 52nd.
The UNLV men's golf team leads the field after the first 36 holes at the ASU Karsten Golf Course (par-71/7,025 yards). The Rebels shot a 5-under 563 to lead Pepperdine by six strokes.
Nathan Lashley (68-70) and Kipp Riehle (69-69) of Arizona lead the individual race at 4-under 138, but Riehle is playing as an individual and is not counted in the Wildcat's team score. Brian O'Flaherty of Pepperdine is in third at 139 (71-68).
The tournament concludes on Saturday with 18 holes. Tee times begin at 7 a.m. The final group will tee at 9:06 a.m.
Colorado State next competes in the Cougar Classic on April 22-23.
