Loree Smith Breaks NCAA Record

Colorado State senior Loree Smith won the hammer throw in the opening event of the day with a Mountain West Conference, Mountain West Championship, Jack Christiansen Track, American collegiate and NCAA record of 229-9. It is also the best throw by an American this season. After the third day of competition, the women?s team leads with 94 points, 15 ahead of BYU with 79.

Smith opened the competition with a record throw of 225-8 and then in her sixth and final throw, unleashed the throw of 229-9. She led a contingent of five Rams in the top eight with sophomore Jaimee Troth finishing fourth, freshman Stacey Poulos placing fifth, sophomore Mindy Parsons in sixth and junior Jill McCormick in eighth. The Rams scored a total of 23 points in the event.

Senior Adam Trainor answered in the next event, winning the men?s hammer with a throw of 216-10. The Rams finished first, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth in the hammer with junior Jace Rivera throwing 199-4 to finish fourth, sophomore Trey Eder placing fifth, freshman Jason Schutz in seventh, fellow freshman Alex Godell in eighth and sophomore Joe Trainor in ninth -- earning the Rams 22 points.

Smith wasn?t finished on the day, winning the women?s discus with a Mountain West Championship record of 177-1, breaking the old record of 174-4 held by former Ram standout Liz Toman from 2001, and winning her third Mountain West discus title. Junior Katie Hansen finished second with a throw of 170-7, while McCormick was fourth with a throw of 159-4 and Poulos was ninth with a throw of 140-3.

Senior Jacob Benson cleared 6-8.75 in the high jump to finish third, while sophomore Danny Cecchini and freshman Collin Ferguson both cleared 6-2.75 to place seventh and eighth, respectively. Benson then turned around and won the long jump with a personal best leap of 24-0.75 and freshman Jarelle Johnson placed third after a personal best jump of 22-3.

Sophomore Janay DeLoach finished second in the long jump after a leap of 19-8.75, while sophomore Katie Lloyd placed sixth with a jump of 18-5. Lloyd then finished third in the high jump, clearing 5-7, while sophomore Rheannon Backes was fourth and freshman Anne McLaughlin was sixth. Junior Jenny Higgason and junior Cristina Gourdin tied for ninth.

In the men?s discus, Eder placed fourth with a personal best throw of 169-9, while Joe Trainor was seventh and Schutz placed eighth.

The first race on the track, the women?s steeplechase saw freshman Linnea Pudwill run a regional qualifying time of 11:04.82 to finish fourth in her first ever race. Then in the men?s steeplechase senior Mike Nicks finished second after running a 9:07.98. Sophomore Rob Watson finished in seventh place in the same race. The last final of the day, the men?s 10,000 meters, saw sophomore Matt Cianciulli finish second with a time of 31:22.82.

In the women?s preliminary races, DeLoach qualified for the finals in the 100 meters with the second fastest time at 11.78 and qualified in the finals of the 200 meters in the first race of her career after clocking in at 24.67. Senior Katrice Thomas and sophomore Megan Fox qualified third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 meters and qualified sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 400 meters. In the 800 meters, senior Becky Hammitt qualified seventh, while sophomore Rachelle Mims took the final qualifying spot in the 100 meter hurdles. In the 400 meter hurdles, Gourdin automatically qualified for finals by winning the first heat in a tie after running a 1:02.00.

In the men?s preliminary races, both sophomore Denny Majerus and senior Mike Horton qualified in the 100 meters, while in the 200 meters, Majerus qualified fourth and senior Chris Grapsas qualified eighth. Senior Brandon Kent qualified for the finals in the 400 meters and both junior Paul Michel and senior Brett Melin qualified in the 800 meters. Seniors Mike Horton and Tom Waido both qualified for the 110 meter hurdle finals tomorrow, while Waido and freshman Kyle Keeler advanced to the finals in the 400 hurdles.
