Smith Wins NCAA Regional

Colorado State senior thrower Loree Smith won the NCAA Regional competition in the women?s hammer to earn an automatic spot in the NCAA Championship in two weeks in Sacramento, Calif., after throwing 217-8 in Norman, Oklahoma.
Smith was the only Ram to earn the automatic berth on the first day of competition on the campus of Oklahoma. Junior Paul Michel qualified for finals in the 1500 meters after running a 3:48.12 to place 12th and earn the last spot. He will compete in the finals at 5:22 Central tomorrow evening.
Junior Jaimee Troth placed 10th in the hammer with a throw of 181-3, while freshman Jason Schutz finished ninth in the discus with a throw of 171-5. Sophomore Trey Eder, freshman Alex Godell and sophomore Joe Trainor finished 25th through 27th, respectively in the same event. Eder then finished 15th in the shot put with a throw of 55-4.75.
Senior Jacob Benson closed his storied career with a jump of 21-4.75 in the long jump to finish 21st.
Sophomore Janay DeLoach finished 11th in the long jump with a leap of 19-4 and then finished ninth, missing qualifying by 0.02 in the 100 meters, with her time of 11.80. Senior Katrice Thomas also closed her career with a 21st place finish, with hers coming in the 400 meters after clocking a 55.85.
In the last two races of the day, the women?s and men?s 5000 meters, junior Nicole Feest was 10th and senior Michelle Carman was 12th in the women?s race, while sophomore Matt Cianciulli was 19th.
The rest of the field events and the steeplechase events will take place tomorrow. The top five finishers in each event earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championship.
