Modrall Sperling Invite: Colorado State begins the 2006 calendar year with a trip to Albuquerque to compete in the Modrall Sperling Lobo Invitational. The invite will be held at the new Albuquerque Convention Center. Thirty-four athletes and five 4x400-meter relay teams ranked among the top-12 in the nation in Trackwire's most recent Dandy Dozen list are entered in Saturday's meet. The field consists of: Arizona, BYU, California, Colorado State, Florida State, LSU, New Mexico, Portland State, Rice, USC, Texas A&M and UTEP.

Getting On Board: In the first meet of the season, junior Janay DeLoach added another school record to her repertoire, winning the 55 meters at the Wyoming Open with a record time of 6.84. She breaks the school record of 6.86 held by Brandi Bernert from 1998. DeLoach also broke the fieldhouse record, also of 6.86 from Deena Burrows of UCLA in 1993. DeLoach now owns three individual records (indoor and outdoor long jump) along with three outdoor relay records. Her time of 6.84 is an NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Provisionally: Janay DeLoach, junior Trey Eder and senior Jill McCormick all provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship at the Wyoming Open. DeLoach ran a 6.84 in the 55 meters, while Eder won the weight throw with a mark of 62-11.5, just a half-inch off his personal best of 63-0 from last year's MWC Championship. McCormick also won the weight throw with a provisional mark of 63-2.75. Both Eder and McCormick provisionally qualified last season in the weight throw as well, but did not advance to the NCAA Championships.

Wyoming Open Recap: In the first meet of the season the Rams brought home 13 individual titles in the non-scoring affair. The women's team won every field event, led by Jill McCormick, who was victorious in both the shot put and weight throw. Janay DeLoach also was a double winner on the day, getting titles in both the 55 meters and the long jump. Senior Amanda Huddleston-Miller won the triple jump, while junior Rae Backes won the high jump and sophomore Ashleigh Morton won the pole vault. The men swept the top four spots in the weight throw and the top three in both the shot put and triple jump, led by a provisional qualifying mark from Trey Eder in the weight throw. Junior Kevin Johnson also won the long jump. On the track, sophomore Emily Pearson had the top collegiate time in the 55 hurdles, while junior Drew Morano had the best collegiate time in the 55 meters. Sophomore Rebekah Yetzer also won the 600 yards.

Super Sophomores: Five sophomores dramatically bettered their career-bests at the Wyoming Open. Stacey Poulos increased her weight throw from 51-8.25 to 53-6.5, almost two feet from the end of last season. Ashleigh Morton added over a foot to her pole vault best, ending 2004 at 10-0 and clearing 11-0.25 in Laramie. Emily Pearson bettered her time in the 55 meter hurdles from 8.86 to 8.33, while Niomi Ridge bettered her hurdles time from 9.12 to 8.69. On the men's side Jason Schutz increased his weight throw best by over two feet, from 58-7.5 to 60-11.25.

Freshman Impact: Freshman David Eischeid, in his first collegiate event, leaped 22-11.25 in the long jump to finish second behind teammate Kevin Johnson and record one of the top 15 jumps in school indoor history. Eischeid also finished second in the 200 meters, third in the triple jump and eighth in the 55 meters at his first meet.

Coach of the Year: Head Coach Del Hessel was named Co-Women's Coach of the Year for 2004 after leading the Rams to a second place finish at the conference championship, sharing the title with R. Craig Poole of BYU. Hessel has been named the men's indoor coach of the year in 2002 and 2003 and shared the award with Ralph Lindeman of Air Force in 2004 and this was the first time he was honored with the women's indoor award in the Mountain West. The last time a coach at Colorado State was named coach of the year during the indoor season came in 1992 when Doug Max was honored.

Next Up: After the Modrall Sperling Lobo Invitational, most of the team will head to Lincoln for the Nebraska Triangular, while the multi-event athletes will return to Albuquerque for the Lobo Multis.
