Track & Field Prepares For Nebraska Triangular

Nebraska Triangular: Colorado State continues its season with the Nebraska Triangular in Lincoln. The Rams will compete against the Huskers, as well as Kent State. There is a limit of two athletes per event, so the field will be six for each.
New Mexico Multis: The CSU multi-event athletes will head back to Albuquerque on Thursday and Friday for the New Mexico Invitational Multis. Junior Kevin Johnson, junior Katie Lloyd and sophomore Emily Pearson will compete for the Rams.
Falling By The Wayside: Junior Janay DeLoach broke her second school record in as many meets when she won the long jump at the Modrall Sperling Lobo Invitational with a leap of 20-4.5. She breaks her own record of 20-1.75 from the 2004 Mountain West Championship. She also holds the school record in the 55 meters from the Wyoming Open. For her efforts at the Lobo Invitational, she was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Athlete of the Week. DeLoach currently ranks sixth on the NCAA descending order list in the long jump and ninth in the 60 meters.
Throwing Their Weight Around: Seniors Trey Eder and Jill McCormick kept up their winning ways at the Lobo Invitational. Eder won the men's weight throw with a career-best and NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 65-2.25, while McCormick won the women's event with a career-best and NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 65-2. McCormick currently ranks ninth on the NCAA descending order list, while Eder ranks 16th.
Freshmen Phenoms: A quartet of true freshmen have already made major impacts on the Colorado State team. For the women, Chantelle Dron posted the fifth fastest time in school history in the 800 meters, finishing third in 2:12.44. Rashaun Greer, running for the first time this season, now ranks 11th in school history in the 60 meter hurdles after running an 8.37 to place ninth, while teammate Zach Jordan now ranks 19th in the 60 meters after clocking a 7.16. David Eischeid posted the 12th best long jump in school history at the Wyoming Open after placing second with a leap of 22-11.25.
Getting On Board: In the first meet of the season, Janay DeLoach added another school record to her repertoire, winning the 55 meters at the Wyoming Open with a record time of 6.84. She breaks the school record of 6.86 held by Brandi Bernert from 1998. DeLoach also broke the fieldhouse record, also of 6.86 from Deena Burrows of UCLA in 1993. DeLoach now owns three individual records (indoor and outdoor long jump) along with three outdoor relay records. Her time of 6.84 is an NCAA provisional qualifying time.
Best In The Mountain West (Men): Several CSU athletes have the best mark in the Mountain West Conference this season. Junior Justin Hazzard leads in the 60 meter hurdles, while Kevin Johnson and David Eischeid have the top two marks in the long jump. Sophomore Jason Smith has the best triple jump in the league, while senior Matt McKinney, senior Nate Heyrman and Trey Eder hold the top three spots in the shot put and Eder, Heyrman, sophomore Jason Schutz and senior Jace Rivera own the top four spots in the weight throw.
Best In The Mountain West (Women): Several CSU athletes have the best mark in the Mountain West Conference this season. Janay DeLoach leads in both the 60 meters and long jump, while Chantelle Dron has the top time in the 800 meters, junior Rae Backes leads in the high jump and Jill McCormick leads the conference in the weight throw.
Victorious: The fourth member of the CSU track & field team to bring home an individual title from the Modrall Sperling Lobo Invitational was junior Rob Watson in the 3000 meters. Watson won the event with a personal best time of 8:27.40. He has now competed for the Rams in seven indoor races and has four titles and this was his second 3000 title to add to a pair of mile wins.
Returning Firepower: The Rams return 13 student-athletes who earned Mountain West All-Conference honors in 2005. Those athletes follow, along with the events they earned honors in. Champions are also marked with an *.

They're Smart Too: Colorado State has four athletes returning to the 2006 team that were named to the National Collegiate Division I Track Coaches Association 2005 All-Academic Track and Field Teams. Junior Matt Cianciulli, Janay DeLoach, Katie Lloyd and freshman Alex Godell were all honored. Cianciulli was one of just eight men to sport a perfect 4.00 grade point average among the honorees. To be selected to the team, a student-athlete must have competed in at least 50% of the team's competitions and hold a 3.25 grade point average or better.
Coach of the Year: Head Coach Del Hessel was named Co-Women's Coach of the Year for 2005 after leading the Rams to a second place finish at the conference championship, sharing the title with R. Craig Poole of BYU. Hessel has been named the men's indoor coach of the year in 2002 and 2003 and shared the award with Ralph Lindeman of Air Force in 2004 and this was the first time he was honored with the women's indoor award in the Mountain West. The last time a coach at Colorado State was named coach of the year during the indoor season came in 1992 when Doug Max was honored.
Next Up: Colorado State will head south for the Air Force Invitational on Feb. 3-4. Teams tentatively scheduled to compete are: Air Force, Arizona State, BYU, UC Irvine, Colorado, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawai'i, New Mexico, Sacramento State, USC, Utah State, Wyoming; Div II -Adams State, CU Colorado Springs, Colorado School of Mines, Western State.
