On the Next Tee
The Colorado State women's golf team will travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to compete in the Prices Give `Em Five Fund/New Mexico State University Invitational on October 16, 17 and 18. Play will begin at 8:30 a.m. Monday and Tuesday, and at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Unlike previous tournaments, in which two rounds were played together on the opening day, each day will feature independent 18-hole rounds.
The Field
The 17-team field for the Give `Em Five Invitational includes teams from the Big Ten, Big 12, Big West, Conference USA, WAC, West Coast Conference and the Mountain West. Along with Colorado State, the field includes: Baylor, Boise State, Colorado, Gonzaga, Hawai'i, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico State, Oklahoma, San Jose State, UC Davis and UTEP.
Rams Battle Windy Conditions at CU Memorial
The Colorado State women's golf team finished in a tie for 13th at the Heather Farr/CU Memoiral Invitational, carding rounds of 311, 309 and 330 for a total score of 950. Windy conditions plagued the Rams on the final day, helping contribute to the teams highest tournament score of the season. Chelsea Benton, who fired rounds of 78, 76 and 79, was the top finisher for the Rams for the second consecutive tournament. Stefanie Ferguson and Natalie Stone each shot rounds of 74, which were the lowest for the team in the event. This is the first time all year for the Rams not to have an individual finish in the top 10.
The University of Denver won the event, recording a tournament score of 900. Individually, Dale Gammie from the Univeristy of Hawaii took top honors, carding a two-under-par 214 for the tournament.
Benton By the Numbers
Chelsea Benton's stroke average of 74.33 is the second-lowest in the conference this season among golfers who have played nine rounds. In addition, her current average is lower than it was at the same time last season, in which she set the school record for the lowerst single-season stroke average. After playing her first nine rounds last season, her average was 75.11. Benton then went on to post a 74.97 season stroke average, setting the school record.
Deja Vu in Las Cruces
Four Rams on this year's team contributed to the squad's eighth place finish at the 2005 Give `Em Five Invitational. Megan Chapman, Chelsea Benton, Amber Ward and Stefanie Ferguson all played in last year's event and will look to turn this experience into a strong finish this year.
Familiar Foes
Four teams competing in the Give `Em Five have played against the Rams in two out of their first three tournaments of the season. This will be the third time Colorado State has played against Baylor, Colorado, Gonzaga and San Jose State.
