Benton Leads Rams to Ninth Spot After Round One

Colorado State junior Chelsea Benton shot a one-over 73 to lead the CSU women's golf team to a tie for the ninth spot after one round of the Price's "Give Em Five"/New Mexico State University Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., Monday. The tournament is being played at the 6,319-yard, par 72 New Mexico State Golf Course.
Benton's 73 ranks as the fifth-best individual score for round one and is just one stroke off of four players shooting even-par 72s. Megan Chapman and Kasey Claussen each posted 79s in the first round to tie for 49th while Natalie Stone had an eight-over 80 and Amber Ward carded an 83 to round out CSU's scoring.
CSU, with a first round 311, is 15 strokes off team leader San Jose State, who shot a 296 on Monday.
Play resumes Tuesday with round two teeing off at 8:30 a.m.
