Henderson, Nev. - The Colorado State women's golf team sits in ninth place at the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown after carding an 11-over 299 in first round action Monday. The 299 ranks as the Rams' fourth-best round of the season and their first sub-300 round since Sep. 25.
Kasey Claussen leads CSU after shooting a one-over 73. She is currently in a tie for 21st, one stroke ahead of teammate Megan Chapman whose 74 places her in a tie for 27th. Amber Ward had a three-over 75 and is in 39th while junior Chelsea Benton had a 77 and is in 53rd. Natalie Stone rounds out Ram scoring with an eight-over 80 in the first round.
"Our ball-striking ability from Kasey, Amber and Megan was awesome today," said head coach Angie Hopkins. "Each of those players hit 13 or more greens today. Chelsea and Natalie struggled with their swings and, on a desert golf course, its tough to get out of trouble."
No. 3-ranked Arizona State and No.-19-ranked Oklahoma State lead the tournament, each shooting a four-over 292 on the day. Sarah Bradley of Oklahoma State is the individual leader, recording a three-under 69 on Monday.
CSU continues play in the Founders Collegiate Showdown with 18 holes on Tuesday before completing the tournament with the final round on Wednesday. The tournament is being held at the Anthem Country Club in Henderson, Nev.
