The Colorado State University women's basketball team opened up the 2006-07 season with a 72-48 exhibition victory over Western State College Sunday afternoon at Moby Arena behind double-digit scoring games from three of the team's eight freshmen and a career-most 16 points from senior Marilyn Moulton.
As expected, the Rams young corps made an immediate impact. Juanise Cornell, Kelly Jo Mullaney and Raysha Ritter each reached double-digits. Along with her 12 points, Cornell pulled down 10 rebounds to record the double-double. Mullaney and Ritter each finished with 11 points in the contest.
Senior Molly Nohr narrowly missed a triple-double for the Rams, finishing with nine points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Overall the Rams, who averaged more than 18 turnovers per game a season ago, only gave the ball away eight times in the contest, compared with 15 for Western State.
The rebounding edge also belonged to Colorado State. Led by Cornell and Nohr, the Rams out-boarded the Mountaineers 46-35.
Guard Chelsea Wilkins led Western State in scoring with 10 points in the game and five rebounds from forward Audra Lawson was also a team-most.
The Rams will have one more tune-up on the schedule when they face Metro State at 7 p.m. on Thursday night to close out exhibition play. Colorado State will then open the regular season at home against UMKC on Nov. 13.
