Santa Cruz, Calif. - The Colorado State water polo team posted a pair of fourth-quarter rallies to go 2-1 in the first day of the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest on a chilly Saturday in northern California.
The Rams began the day with a come-from-behind 6-5 win over Cal State East Bay in the morning marking their first WWPA victory of the season. In the match, Ram sophomore Annie Quinn posted three goals to lead the team while Laurien White, Emily McCullough and Monica Schuh each had one. Holly Stanfill allowed five goals and made nine saves in the victory.
In the second match of the day, CSU made another late-game rally to defeat Sonoma State 6-4. After trailing in the second half the Rams shut out the Seawolves in the fourth to earn the two-goal victory. Marisa Fernandez had a team-high two goals in the match while White, Quinn, Schuh and Brittany McGinley all chipped in one. Stanfill turned away 10 Sonoma State shots to earn the victory in goal for the Rams.
In the final match of the day, CSU was downed by host school and WWPA foe UC Santa Cruz. The Slugs posted a 6-2 win over the Rams with CSU's goals coming from Quinn and Schuh. Andrea Lugo had seven saves in net for Colorado State.
"It was good, physical play today," commented CSU assistant water polo coach Michael Moody. "We played really well against Sonoma State and played good team ball all around."
CSU (4-4, 1-1 WWPA) will play matches against nationally-ranked Santa Clara and Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday in the final day of the Slugfest.
