Katie Lloyd Wins MWC Pentathlon Title

Colorado State junior Katie Lloyd successfully defended her Mountain West Conference Outdoor Heptathlon Championship with the Mountain West Conference Indoor Pentathlon title today at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Lloyd tallied 3,898 points over the five events en route to breaking a school record that's older than she is, moving past Nancy Malloy's record of 3,855 from 1979. Lloyd's total is also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She won this season's title by 18 points over Amanda Feigt of Utah.
Lloyd started the day with a second-place finish in the 60 hurdles, tying her career best with a time of 8.79. She then won the high jump with a clearance of 5-6 and finished second in the shot put behind teammate Ashleigh Morton with a personal best throw of 39-7.25. In the long jump, Lloyd was second with a personal best leap of 18-11.75 then finished the day with a personal best time of 2:32.26 in the 800 meters.
Sophomore Emily Pearson finished sixth in the heptathlon with a personal best total of 3,577, while Morton finished seventh with a personal best total of 3,492 and sophomore Tonya Cure also tallied a personal best total, placing eighth with 3,385 points.
Pearson tallied personal bests in the first three events, running an 8.94 in the 60 hurdles, clearing 5-2.5 in the high jump and threw 37-10 in the shot put. She then tied her personal best with a leap of 16-11.5 in the long jump and closed the competition with a 2:29.87 in the 800 meters.
Morton tied her personal best by clearing 5-2.5 in the high jump, and had personal bests in the shot put, long jump and 800 meters with marks of 40-0.5, 18-3 and 2:32.23, respectively. She also ran a 10.00 in the 60 hurdles to begin competition.
Cure notched personal bests with a 9.41 in the hurdles and 31-4.75 in the shot put. She also cleared 5-1.25 in the high jump, jumped 17-2.25 in the long jump and concluded with 2:26.03 in the 800.
Junior Kevin Johnson is in fourth place after the first day of the men's heptathlon. He began competition with a personal best time of 7.17 in the 60 meters, then jumped 22-9 in the long jump. In the shot put, Johnson threw 40-7, then cleared a personal best 6-4.25 in the high jump to end day one with 2,998 points. He concludes competition tomorrow morning.
The main portion of the 2006 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track & Field begins tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. with the women's weight throw and the men's long jump.
