Indoor Track & Field Preview: Holiday Inn Team Invitational

Holiday Inn Team Invitational: Select members of the Colorado State track & field team will head to Boise State for the Holiday Inn Team Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Teams competing are Boise State, Cal State Stanislaus, Colorado State, Portland State, South Dakota and Utah State. Competition will take place at the Idaho Sports Center/Jacksons Track in Nampa, just north of Boise. A total of 21 athletes will be going to Boise, including: junior Janay DeLoach, freshman Chantelle Dron, junior Trey Eder, junior Megan Fox, senior Justin Hazzard, freshman Kristen Hemphill, senior Nate Heyrman, senior Amanda Huddleston-Miller, junior Kevin Johnson, freshman Kyle Keeler, junior Danielle Korb, junior Katie Lloyd, sophomore Heather Loseke, senior Jill McCormick, senior Matt McKinney, junior Drew Morano, sophomore Emily Pearson, senior Jace Rivera, freshman Scott Sanders, senior Dylan Spitzer and junior Rob Watson.
School of Mines All-Comers: The rest of the team will head south for the School of Mines Invitational in Golden. Events are scheduled to begin at 8:30 AM.
Air Force Invitational Recap: For the ninth time in the last 10 years, Colorado State has swept the men's and women's titles at the Air Force Invitational. The men scored 141.5 points to defeat Colorado with 125, while the women claimed the title with 181.5 points with Arizona State coming in second with 127 points. The Ram women won the 800 meters, one mile and 3000 meter unseeded races, mile, 5000 meters, triple jump and the distance medley relay, while the men won the weight throw, 3000 meters unseeded, 5000 meters and shot put.
NCAA Qualified: Nate Heyrman added his name to the list of CSU qualified for the NCAA Championships this weekend. Heyrman finished second in the weight throw behind teammate Trey Eder with a season-best throw of 63-2.
Quick Like A Fox: Megan Fox recorded the fourth fastest 60 meter time in school history when she finished second at the Air Force Invitational, clocking in at 7.67. Fox now ranks in the top 10 in school history in the 60, 200 and 400 meters.
Dron-ing Them Out: Chantelle Dron won the mile at the Air Force Invitational with an altitude adjusted time of 4:53.29. She now has the top time in the Mountain West Conference in both the 800 meters and the mile as a true freshman.
Doubly Honored: Jill McCormick was named the Mountain West Conference Track & Field Athlete of the Week after winning the weight throw with a personal best throw of 66-8.5 at the Nebraska Triangular. It was the second straight week a Ram female athlete was honored after Janay DeLoach earned the award for her school record breaking performance in the long jump at the Modrall Sperling Lobo Invitational (20-4.5).
Made To Be Broken: Three school records have fallen already this season. Kevin Johnson broke the school heptathlon record with his third place finish at the Zia Classic Multis, totaling 5,185 points and missing the NCAA provisional qualifying mark by just 15 points. Johnson breaks his own record of 5,077 from last season. Janay DeLoach has two school records to her name. She won the long jump at the Modrall Sperling Lobo Invitational with a leap of 20-4.5, breaking her own record of 20-1.75 from the 2004 Mountain West Championship. She also holds the school record in the 55 meters from the Wyoming Open.
Making The List: This weekend several athletes made their way into the top 10 in school history in their respective events. Megan Fox is now fourth in the 60 meters, while junior Tonya Cure moved into 10th on the pentathlon list after totaling 3343 points and junior Haley Hunt ranks 10th in the weight throw. Freshman Rashaun Greer posted the eighth best 60 meter hurdles time at 8.28 and Matt McKinney now ranks sixth in the shot put with a throw of 58-2.
Jump Longer, Throw Further: Colorado State has the top ranked male and female athlete in the Mountain West Conference in both the long jump and weight throw. For the men, Kevin Johnson and freshman David Eischeid rank 1-2 in the long jump, while Trey Eder, Nate Heyrman, Jace Rivera and sophomore Jason Schutz rank 1-4, respectively in the weight throw. Janay DeLoach and Jill McCormick are atop the Mountain West in the long jump and weight throw, respectively.
Freshmen Phenoms: Eight true freshmen have already made major impacts on the Colorado State team. For the women, Chantelle Dron posted the fifth fastest time in school history in the 800 meters, and also has the fourth quickest 600 yards time. Kristen Hemphill ranks sixth on the mile charts after a 4:56.69 in Nebraska. Rashaun Greer now ranks eighth in school history in the 60 meter hurdles and 18th in the 60, while teammate Zach Jordan ranks 20th in the 60 meters and Scott Sanders is 12th in the 800 meters. David Eischeid posted the 12th best long jump in school history at the Wyoming Open after placing second with a leap of 22-11.25.
Best In The Mountain West (Men): Several CSU male athletes have the best mark in the Mountain West Conference this season. Justin Hazzard leads in the 60 meter hurdles, while Rob Watson leads in the 3000 meters and he and sophomore Logan Sherman rank 1-2 in the 5000 meters. Kevin Johnson and David Eischeid have the top two marks in the long jump. Matt McKinney, Nate Heyrman and Trey Eder hold the top three spots in the shot put and Eder, Heyrman, Jace Rivera and Jason Schutz own the top four spots in the weight throw.

Pass The Baton: Both the men and women's team have the top ranked time in the distance medley relay this season.
Next On The Schedule: After splitting up this weekend, the Rams rejoin as one squad to head to Laramie for the Robert Shine Invitational on Friday, Feb. 17. The Rams then have the Mountain West Conference Championships on Feb. 23-25 in Albquerque. This is the first time in Mountain West Conference history the championship has been held anywhere besides the Air Force Academy.
