Ram Water Polo Suffers Pair of Losses

Los Angeles, Calif. - The Colorado State water polo team suffered a pair of losses in the first day of the Loyola Marymount Invitational in Los Angeles Friday. The Rams fell to Sonoma State 7-6 and lost to No. 7 San Diego State 16-0 in the day's competition.
Against Sonoma State (12-4), the the Seawolves scored two unanswered goals in the second period to break a 3-3 tie and lead 5-3 at the halftime break. CSU fought its way back into the game tying the score at 6-6 on an Annie Quinn goal with 37 seconds to play in the game but Sonoma State's Ashley Phelps put away her second goal of the contest with 22 seconds to play to give the Seawolves the 7-6 win.
Quinn, the nation's fourth-leading scorer, scored four times for the Rams while freshman Monica Schuh and senior Marisa Fernandez each had one goal in the game. Holly Stanfill turned away nine Sonoma State shots in the game in goal for the Rams who have now split with the Seawolves this season.
In the second game of the day, No. 7 San Diego State (14-5) jumped on top of the Rams with four goals in the first and five in the second before adding four in the third and another three in the fourth while holding CSU scoreless on 11 shot attempts in the game.
Holly Stanfill (3) and Andrea Lugo (4) combined for seven saves in the game for the Rams.
Colorado State (14-14) will face Chapman and No. 4 Loyola Marymount in the final day of the LMU Invitational.
