Five Colorado State multi-event athletes were in competition today either in the California Invitational Heptathlon or Decathlon or the Mt. SAC Relays Heptathlon, all being held at Azusa Pacific University.

In the Cal Decathlon, Colorado State junior Kevin Johnson is in second place after the first day of competition with 3,669 points, just 139 points off the leader, Justin Johnson of Cal State Northridge.

In the Mt. SAC Relays Heptathlon, junior Katie Lloyd is currently in fourth place and second among collegians with 3,213 points and is just 124 points off the leader, Lauren Jordan of Oregon.

Sophomore Emily Pearson sits in sixth place of the Cal Heptathlon after day one, while sophomore Ashleigh Morton is in 12th and sophomore Tonya Cure is 18th.

Johnson began competition with an 11.53 in the 100 meters, then leaped a personal best 23-3.5 in the long jump for 838 points. In the shot put, Johnson threw a personal best 41-5, cleared 6-2 in the high jump and then ran a 51.55 in the 400 meters to end the day with 3,669 points.

Lloyd, the defending heptathlon champion in the Mountain West Conference ran a 14.55 in the 100 meter hurdles, cleared a personal best 5-8.5 in the high jump, missing the regional qualifying mark by just one centimeter. She then threw 38-7.75 in the shot put and finished the day with a 26.42 in the 200 meters.

Pearson opened the day with a 15.09 in the 100 hurdles, then cleared 5-2.5 in the high jump, threw 36-3.5 in the shot put and finished the day with a 25.77 in the 200 meters. She is 223 points off the leader, Annett Wichmann from Hawai'i (3,193 points) with her one day total of 2,970 points. Pearson's shot put and 200 meters are both better than her previous heptathlon -- the Glenn Morris Meet at CSU on March 30-31.

Morton, also just a sophomore, opened the day with a personal best time of 15.78 in the 100 hurdles. She then cleared 5-1.25 in the high jump, threw a personal best 38-11 in the shot put and finished the day with a 27.25 in the 200 meters for a total of 2,773 points.

Cure tallied 2,644 points in the first day, running a 16.52 in the 100 hurdles, clearing 5-3.75 in the high jump, throwing a personal best 30-8.5 in the shot put and running a 26.61 in the 200 meters. Three of her four events were better then her performances at the Glenn Morris Heptathlon.

The quintet of Rams will conclude their respective competitions tomorrow, while the rest of the Colorado State track & field team will be in Tempe for the 27th annual Sun Angel Classic, hosted by Arizona State.
