Colorado State junior Kevin Johnson won the Cal Decathlon, while junior Katie Lloyd broke the school record in the heptathlon at the Mt. SAC Heptathlon.
The trio of sophomores Emily Pearson, Tonya Cure and Ashleigh Morton also finished third, seventh and 10th, respectively in the Cal Heptathlon.
Johnson scored 6,958 total points, narrowly missing the NCAA provisional qualifying total of 7000 and winning by just 57 points over Air Force's Brian Walsh -- the winner of the MWC indoor heptathlon title last month. Today Johnson ran a personal best 14.98 in the 110 meter hurdles, bettering his previous best by five-tenths of a second. He then threw 123-8 in the discus, cleared a personal best 14-3.25 in the pole vault, threw 155-10 in the javelin and then ran an eight-second personal best of 5:01.47 in the 1500 meters to end with the fifth best decathlon total in school history.
Lloyd finished sixth overall and fourth among collegians with her school record total of 5,266 points, breaking the previous school record of 5,251 held by Cristina Gourdin from last year. Her 5,266 is also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. In the first event of the day, Lloyd qualified for the NCAA regionals with her 19-8 leap in the long jump -- which is a personal best and the third best jump in school history. She then threw 122-11 in the javelin and ended the competition running a 2:38.68 in the 800 meters.
Pearson narrowly missed hitting the NCAA provisional mark of 5,000, scoring 4,951 points to finish third in the Cal Heptathlon. She jumped 16-8.5 in the long jump, threw 136-10 in the javelin and ran a 2:29.67 in the 800 meters during day two. Her total is a personal best, bettering her previous best of 4,867 from the Glenn Morris Heptathlon earlier this year.
Cure tallied a personal best 4,713 points to place seventh, breaking her previous best by almost 150 points. She went 17-7 in the long jump, threw a huge personal best of 116-4 in the javelin and then ran a 2:19.61 in the 800 meters.
Morton scored 4,572 points to end in 10th place. She leapt 17-4.25 in the long jump, threw 112-11 in the javelin and ran a 2:37.85 in the 800 meters.
Colorado State competes Saturday at the 27th annual Sun Angel Classic in Tempe.
