Men's Throwers Move Up In Regional Qualifying

In the men's shot put at the 27th annual Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State, the trio of Colorado State track & field athletes Matt McKinney, Nate Heyrman and Trey Eder qualified or improved their qualifying marks, while McKinney also improved his mark in the discus.

McKinney, a senior transfer from SMU, finished third overall and second among collegians in the discus with his throw of 184-4 which is also the seventh best throw in school history. Then in the shot put, McKinney finished fifth overall and third among collegians with his career-best throw of 58-10.75 which is also the second best throw in CSU history. Heyrman was right behind him with a throw of 58-10, also a career-best and the third best throw for the Rams. Qualifying for the first time this season, Eder threw 55-3 to finish seventh overall and fifth among collegians. Late Friday evening, Heyrman also finished third in the hammer throw with a toss of 186-10.

In the women's hammer, junior Haley Hunt was third with a throw of 180-1, while sophomore Stacey Poulos was fourth at 174-7. Senior Katie Hansen finished fourth in the discus, while senior Jill McCormick and Hunt were seventh and eighth, respectively. Junior Rae Backes cleared 5-7 in the high jump to finish third and senior Amanda Huddleston-Miller was second in the triple jump with a leap of 40-4.25.

Junior Rob Watson continued his dominant ways this season, winning the 5000 meters with a time of 14:29.44, which ranks ninth all-time on the CSU charts and senior Ryan Kirkpatrick was fourth in the same race with a time of 14:49.04. Senior Paul Michel placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.48, a personal best time and the seventh best in school history. Senior Justin Hazzard also placed third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 51.26. Sophomore Drew Morano crossed the finish line fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.58

Sophomore April Thomas finished second in the 5000 meters clocking a 17:12.62 which is the 15th fastest time in school history. Junior Danielle Korb finished fourth in the mile with a time of 4:52.02, while freshmen Kristen Hemphill and Heather Loseke were seventh and ninth, respectively.

Colorado State hosts the Jack Christiansen Invitational on Saturday, April 22, the last home meet of the season for the Rams.
