Rams Start MWC Championship With Double The Fun

Colorado State juniors Katie Lloyd and Kevin Johnson started the 2006 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a bang as both brought home titles for the Rams.
Lloyd tallied 5,418 points to win the crown by 16 points over San Diego State freshman Kristin Olafsdottir. She set the school record, breaking her own record of 5,266 from earlier this season and won her third straight conference title (2005 outdoor heptathlon, 2006 indoor heptathlon). Lloyd's point total is also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, missing the automatic total by just 82 points.
Sophomore Emily Pearson also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship with her fourth place finish of 5,194 points. Sophomore Tonya Cure finished sixth with 4,994 points and sophomore Ashleigh Morton was 10th with 3,672 points.
Johnson tallied a career-best 7,151 points to win his first conference championship and provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. He also posted the third best decathlon total in Colorado State history. Johnson won the 110 meter hurdles to begin day two, running a personal best time of 14.90. He then threw a personal best 136-3 to win the discus, tied his personal best by clearing 14-7.25 in the pole vault to finish second. He threw 147-0 in the javelin and then concluded the competition with a time of 5:01.30 - a personal best by 0.17 of a second to win the conference crown.
Lloyd began day two by jumping 19-3.5 to win the long jump, threw 132-1 to finish second in the javelin and then ran a personal best time of 2:25.76 to end the second day with 5,418 points.
Pearson jumped 17-3.25, won the javelin with a throw of 134-5 and ran a personal best 2:25.18 to finish fourth. Cure went 17-11.5 in the long jump, threw a personal best 117-8 in the javelin and ran a 2:17.49 in the 800 meters for sixth place. Morton jumped 15-6 in the long jump, then finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 116-6 and finished the day running a 2:41.62.
The Mountain West Conference championship continues tomorrow with several finals in the field events and trials in the running events and concludes on Saturday.
