Women Lead After Day Three; Men In Second

Through three days of competition at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship, the Colorado State women's team leads 92.5 to 71 over BYU, while the Cougar men lead over the Rams 101-87.
In the first event of the day, the Ram women started things off with a bang with both sophomore Stacey Poulos and senior Jaimee Troth throwing personal bests to finish second and third, respectively. Poulos threw 194-6 for the third best throw in school history and Troth threw 189-9, which moves her into fifth in CSU history. Junior Haley Hunt finished fifth with a toss of 185-10 and senior Jill McCormick threw a season-best 164-8 to place eighth.
Junior Katie Lloyd continued to perform well after winning the heptathlon with a school record yesterday. She started the day with a fourth-place finish in the long jump, jumping 19-2, then cleared 5-6 to finish third in the high jump. Junior Rae Backes won the high jump, clearing 5-7.75 -- becoming just the second CSU female to win a conference title (Liz Toman, 2000). Backes also won the indoor high jump title. Seniors Katie Hansen and McCormick swept the top two spots in the discus with Hansen throwing 175-10. Hunt also scored, placing sixth.
In the women's steeplechase, freshman Kristen Hemphill finished second, earning all-conference honors and qualifying for the NCAA Regionals with her time of 10:58.57 -- which is the second fastest time in school history. In the final event of the evening, the women's 10,000 meters, which was pushed back two hours to prevent the athletes running in the heat of the day, freshman Danielle Rawlings finished eighth.
Junior Megan Fox qualified for finals in the 400 meters, running a season-best time of 54.76 and also qualified for the finals in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 24.34. Sophomore Emily Pearson qualified for the final in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.42. Junior Danielle Korb qualified for the finals in the 800 meters and senior Cristina Gourdin advanced in the 400 meter hurdles with a season-best time of 1:02.54.
In the first men's event of the day, the Rams swept the medals in the hammer throw with junior Trey Eder winning gold with a throw of 185-1. Junior Nate Heyrman was second with a throw of 183-9 and sophomore Jason Schutz was third with a toss of 178-9. Senior Matt McKinney finished second in the men's discus and Schutz earned his second all-conference honor of the day, placing third.
Junior Kevin Johnson added a second title to his repertoire, winning the long jump with a one-foot personal best, jumping 24-3.5 to qualify for the NCAA Regionals and posting the fifth best jump in school history.
Freshman Scott Sanders ran a personal best time of 9:17.89 to finish fourth in the steeplechase and qualify for the NCAA regionals and sophomore Andres Urbina also posted a career-best time of 9:24.16 to place fifth. Senior Josh Glaab finished second in the 10,000 meters, crossing the tape in 31:54.51 and junior Rob Watson, running in his first career 10K, placed eighth with a time of 32:54.46.
Sophomore Drew Morano qualified fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 47.97 and ninth in the 200 meters. Senior Mike Horton and junior Justin Hazzard both qualified for the finals in the 110 meter hurdles, while Hazzard and senior Dylan Spitzer advanced in the 400 hurdles. Both senior Paul Michel and freshman Steve Swartz will compete tomorrow in the finals of the 800 meters.
Competition begins tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with the women's pole vault.
