Men and Women Second at MWC Track & Field Championship

At the 2006 Mountain West Conference outdoor track and field championship the Colorado State men's team finished second with 178 points, while the women scored 150.5 points. BYU won both titles (men - 248 points, women - 183 points), while TCU finished third on both sides.
Junior Kevin Johnson was awarded the men's high point award winner after scoring 26 points in the championship (1st decathlon, 1st long jump, 3rd triple jump). The women's high point and freshman of the year award went to Kristin Olafsdottir from San Diego State, while the outstanding performance award for the men went to Otis McDaniel of TCU and the women to Dana Pounds of the Air Force Academy. Colorado State head coach Del Hessel was named the women's coach of the year in his final season of coaching.
Seniors Matt McKinney and Nate Heyrman took the top two spots in the shot put, with McKinney throwing a personal best throw of 59-9.75 -- also the second best throw in school history. Heyrman put the shot 58-2.5, while juniors Magnus Lohse and Trey Eder finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Senior Amanda Huddleston-Miller won the final individual event of the day, the triple jump, leaping 41-6 to tie her own school record. She becomes the first-ever triple jump in school history during outdoor competition, either male or female. Sophomore Stacy Hancock finished eighth with a jump of 37-1.75.
Johnson -- a double champion in the decathlon and the long jump, came back to compete in his first triple jump event of the season and finish third with a leap of 48-3.5, which is the eighth best jump in school history. Sophomore Jason Smith finished fifth and freshman David Eischeid, competing injured, finished ninth.
The men's 4x100 meter relay team consisting of freshman Rashaun Greer, junior Denny Majerus, sophomore Collin Ferguson and sophomore Drew Morano finished third, running a 40.82 -- a season best relay time for the Rams.
Senior Mike Horton and junior Justin Hazzard both earned all-conference honors in the 110 meter hurdles with Horton qualifying for the NCAA regional with his season-best time of 14.24, while Hazzard ran a 14.27. Hazzard then placed second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 51.27 and senior Dylan Spitzer was sixth in 53.12. Morano finished fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 47.65 and was seventh in the 200 meters, clocking a 21.36. In the 800, senior Paul Michel finished sixth, while freshman Steve Swartz was seventh. Senior Josh Glaab, who finished second in the 10,000 meters late last night, placed fourth in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:03.99.
Sophomore Emily Pearson threw a personal best in the javelin to finish fourth and qualify for the NCAA regionals with her best throw of 149-3, which is also the third best throw in school history. Minutes after she concluded the javelin competition, Pearson finished sixth in the 100 meter hurdles, running a 14.36. Seniors Jaimee Troth and Jill McCormick finished third and fourth, respectively with Troth throwing 45-10.5 and McCormick 45-9.25.
Junior April Thomas finished second in the 5000 meters, earning all-conference honors and qualifying for regionals with her time of 17:10.59, which is the fifth fastest in school history. Freshman Kristen Hemphill, who was second in the steeplechase yesterday, finished fifth with a time of 17:45.30.
Junior Danielle Korb finished third in the 1500 meters, earning all-conference honors with her time of 4:35.63 and then finished eighth in the 800 meters at 2:19.52. Junior Megan Fox finished sixth in the 400 meters, running a 54.83 and then finished ninth in the 200 meters. Senior Cristina Gourdin placed seventh in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.32.
