Heyrman And McKinney Headed To NCAAs

At the NCAA Midwest Regional for track and field, Colorado State student-athletes Nate Heyrman and Matt McKinneyautomatically advanced to the NCAA Championship after the first day of competition.
In the first event of the afternoon, Heyrman threw a personal best 203-7 in the hammer to place fourth. Junior Trey Eder was just out of the automatic qualifying range, finishing sixth with a throw of 185-0. McKinney automatically qualified in the discus, finishing third with a season-best throw of 188-1. Sophomore Jason Schutz finished ninth with a toss of 183-3 and senior Jason Fearheiley was 20th at 160-2.
Senior Paul Michel qualified for tomorrow's final in the 1500 meters after running a 3:47.88 and fellow senior Justin Hazzard advanced in the 400 hurdles after running a 52.22 to finish second in his heat and eighth overall.
Junior Katie Lloyd notched a personal best in the long jump, leaping 19-10.75 for the third best jump in school history, and finished 11th overall and second in her flight. Sophomore Emily Pearson threw 132-0 in the javelin to finish 20th. Both Lloyd and junior Rae Backes cleared 5-7.25, with Lloyd finishing in a tie for 10th and Backes for 13th. Sophomore April Thomas, in the last event of the evening, finished eighth in the 5000 meters with a time of 17:18.23.
Senior Mike Horton and Hazzard failed to qualify for tomorrow's finals in the 110 meter hurdles. Horton ran a 14.39 while Hazzard clocked in at 15.78. Sophomore Drew Morano posted a time of 48.22 in the 400 meters to finish 20th overall and did not qualify for finals.
