Despite career-high scoring efforts from freshman Ashley McFarland and senior Marilyn Moulton, the Colorado State University women's basketball team fell to the San Diego State Aztecs, 75-66, on Saturday afternoon at Cox Arena.
McFarland exploded for a career-best 24 points on 8-for-9 shooting, 4-for-4 from 3-point range to lead the Rams' comeback effort early in the second half, while Moulton added a career-best 18 points to go along with eight rebounds for the Rams.
The Aztecs opened up the contest on a 13-3 run and held a double-digit lead throughout most of the first half. Freshman Juanise Cornell led the Rams during that opening stretch, scoring all 11 of her points in the games first 13:12 to keep the Rams in the contest early, but the Rams trailed by 33-18 with 4:52 left in the first half. From that point, Moulton and McFarland began to heat up. Moulton scored eight of the team's final 11 of the half, with the other three coming from McFarland from long range, and the Rams trailed 40-29 at halftime.
The Aztecs opened the second half with one free throw from freshman Quenese Davis, before McFarland knocked down three-consecutive three-pointers to cut the lead to three points, 42-38, with 18:30 remaining. Following another single free throw from SDSU's Kate Eveland, Moulton scored the next five points in the contest and the Rams' regained the lead for the first time since the game's opening point, 43-42, with 16 minutes left to play.
Following back-to-back jumpers by Eveland and Davis, the Rams once again trailed, 46-43, and would never again regain the lead. The two teams exchanged baskets over the next 6:40 and the Rams trailed 60-55 with eight minutes left in the game. The Aztecs outscored the Rams 15-11 for the remainder of the contest, eventually taking the 75-66 decision.
In addition to the career-high efforts by McFarland and Moulton, freshman Juanise Cornell reached double-digits for the second consecutive game with 11 points against the Aztecs. Moulton led the team with eight rebounds, and junior Sara Hunter added nine points and seven rebounds. Senior Justine France played well off the bench for the Rams recording tying McFarland for the team-lead with four assists and pulling down three rebounds, while committing no turnovers in 31 minutes of action.
Up next, the Rams will take on rival Wyoming in the season's first installation of the Border War at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27 from Moby Arena.
