Final Stats

With a depleted roster that - due to injuries and the suspension of four players - included two members of the Colorado State University volleyball team, the CSU women's basketball team (6-13, 1-6 MWC) nearly pulled off one of the most amazing upsets in school history, taking the Wyoming Cowgirls (13-5, 4-2 MWC) to overtime at Moby Arena on Thursday night. When the dust settled, however, three players, seniors Justine France and Marilyn Moulton and junior Sara Hunter, had played all 45 minutes of the contest and the game ended in a 78-66 final, as Wyoming clinched the game with a 14-for-14 performance from the free throw line in the extra period.

Moulton, Hunter and freshmen Juanise Cornell and Ashley McFarland each recorded double-figures in the contest, marking the first time this season that four Rams' finished a game with double-digit points. Moulton led the way for the Rams with 17 points, and pulled down eight rebounds and tallied three blocks before fouling out of the contest with just 23 seconds remaining. Hunter finished just one rebound shy of her first-career double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds and dished out three assists while committing no turnovers in the game. Cornell tied a career-best with 15 points to go along with seven rebounds before fouling out of the game and McFarland netted 12 points on 4-for-8 shooting from 3-point range.

The Rams led by as many as 14 points in the first half of the contest. Following a layup by Wyoming center Elisabeth Dissen to start the game, the Rams scored 11 of the next 13 points, including three 3-pointers from McFarland to give the Rams an 11-4 lead just five minutes into the contest. McFarland 3-for-3 performance from 3-point range to begin the game, gave her seven-consecutive 3-point makes, following a 4-for-4 performance in the second half at San Diego State on Saturday.

After a 3 minute, 44 second scoring drought by the Cowgirls between the 14:01 and 10:17 marks, the Rams lead grew to 14 points, 21-8. However, Wyoming battled back, outscoring the Rams 20-10 the rest of the half, and the Rams' cushion dwindled to just three points, 31-28 at halftime.

The second half saw three ties and six lead changes, as Moulton added 10 of her 17 points for the Rams and Wyoming's Hanna Zavecz scored 13 of her game-high 23 points.

In overtime, the teams combined for just two field goals, but the Cowgirls nailed all 14 free throw attempts, compared with just two free throws for the Rams, to leave Moby with a 78-66 victory in the 71st edition of the Border War.

Sophomore volleyball players Mekana Barnes and Ashley Fornstrom suited up for the Rams in the contest, and Barnes saw 23 seconds of action to end the game after Moulton picked up her fifth foul.

The Rams will take a much needed break, with no contest slated for this weekend, before the team heads back on the road to face the UNLV Lady Rebels on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast live on the mtn.
