Junior guard Sara Hunter scored a game-high 18 points and freshman forward Juanise Cornell paced all players with 10 rebounds, but it was not enough, as Colorado State (6-14, 1-7 MWC) fell at UNLV (10-10, 4-4 MWC) 57-46 on Thursday night at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nev.
Both teams struggled offensively to begin the game and senior center Marilyn Moulton opened up the scoring with a layup at the 17:44 mark. Following a 3-point shot by freshman Ashley McFarland, the Rams led 5-2, three minutes into the contest.
UNLV then opened up a 13-3 run, and the Rams trailed 15-8 at the 9:40 mark. Colorado State responded with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the game at 15 with 5:58 left, but the Lady Rebels closed out the half on a 10-3 run to take a 24-18 lead into the half.
Coming out of the half, sophomore forward Kelly Finley and Hunter each knocked down a quick 3-pointer, and the Rams trailed by just five points, 29-24 with 15:32 left in the game. However, the Rebels responded with a 10-2 run to push the lead to 13 points, 39-26 at the 10:53 mark, and the Rams never get the game back to within single digits.
Following a layup by Cornell at the 10:38 mark, that snapped a 6-0 UNLV run, the Rebels added 10 of the game's next 14 points, and the Rams' deficit expanded to 17 points with 7:13 remaining in the contest.
Moulton converted on a free throw at the 5:49 mark of the second half, the Rams' first free throw make of the contest, to complete a 3-point play. From that point, Hunter scored eight of CSU's final 11 points of the contest, but the Rebels sealed the victory by hitting six of their final eight free throws in the final two minutes of the game.
Colorado State shot a season-most 32 3-pointers in the game, converting on eight of those attempts (25 percent) while UNLV shot just 20 percent (2-for-10) from long range. UNLV outrebounded the Rams by a 45-35 margin, and was able to convert 21 Ram turnovers into 20 points, compared with just five points on 18 UNLV turnovers for CSU.
Shamela Hampton led the Rebels with 11 points in the contest and Sequoia Holmes added 10. Holmes, Hampton and Fay Muller - the leading rebounder in the Mountain West - each pulled down nine rebounds in the game.
Next up, the Rams will face the Air Force Falcons at 2 p.m. on Sunday from Moby Arena. The Rams defeated the Falcons, 65-56, in their last meeting on Jan. 4.
