The Matchup
Colorado State looks to bounce back from a slow start to the 2007-08 season against in-state rival Colorado.
The Rams and Buffs meet for the 38th time in the series on Saturday afternoon at Moby Arena. Tipoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. MT.
The game, which will be broadcast live on The Mtn., marks the Rams' first appearance on theMountain West Conference sports network this season, and their second televised matchup in as many games.
The Rams enter the contest with a 1-6 record, having lost a hard-fought battle at Denver, 68-52, on Wednesday night at Magness Arena.
Colorado has opened up the season with a 3-2 record, including back-to-back home wins over Rice (72-55) and Northern Colorado (69-60) at the Coors Events Center in Boulder.
About Colorado
Colorado comes to Moby Arena with a 3-2 record in 2007-08, behind the guidance of head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller, now in her third season at the helm of the Buffaloes' program.
Since taking over the program from legendary coach Ceal Barry, McConnell-Miller's rebuilding process has resulted in a 9-21 season in 2005-06 and a 13-17 campaign last season.
Colorado opened the season with a 66-48 victory at San Francisco, before suffering two consecutive losses - at USC (70-57) and vs. Siena (83-74) - before picking up back-to-back victories over Rice and Nothern Colorado to move above .500 on the season.
The Buffaloes returned eight letterwinners this season, including four starters, most notably senior forward Jackie McFarland. McFarland, a 2007 AP honorable mention All-American and All-Big 12 performer, led the 2006-07 squad averaging 17.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game as a junior. This season, McFarland once again ranks as the team's top scorer (18.2 ppg.) and rebounder (9.0 rpg.). McFarland also ranks second on the team in assists, dishing out 15 in five contests.
Freshman forward Brittany Spears is off to a good start for the Buffs, averaging 12.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest.
The Rundown
Saturdays game will mark the 38th meeting in the series between the Rams and Buffaloes. Colorado owns a 27-10 advantage in the all-time series, but the two teams have split the last eight meetings, each winning three-of-four games on its home court. Under Jen Warden, the Rams are 1-1 against Colorado. In her first year on the Rams' sideline, Colorado State downed the Buffs, 86-83, in a thriller at Moby Arena. Last season, CU bested the Rams, 56-51 in Boulder.
Denver Notables
Wednesday marked the first appearance for Colorado State on television this season. The Rams and Pioneers were broadcast live on Fox Sports Net Rocky Mountain. Colorado State is slated to play at least three more games on television this season, including Saturday's matchup with Colorado.
Junior forward Britney Minor earned her first starting nod in five games - and third overall - and did not dissappoint. The 5-10 forward from Blinn College, tied for the team lead with a career best 13 points in the game. Minor's seven rebounds and three steals were also career bests.
Sara Hunter moved into second place in the CSU record books for career 3-pointers made, knocking down her 184th trey at the 8:56 mark of the first half. Hunter, who enters Saturday's contest with 186 3-poitners in her career, moved ahead of Katie Cronin (183) and now sits behind Ram great Becky Hammon, securely in first place with 365.
Guard Zoi Simmons assisted on Hunter's momentous 3-pointer, one of four assists on the night for the freshman from Fontana, Calif. Simmons' four assits is a career-high and established a new season-best by a Rams player.
Sophomore forward Elle Queen recorded her second-career double-digit rebounding game, matching her 11-board output in the Rams' triple-overtime game against San Francisco. Queen and sophomore forward Juanise Cornell are the only CSU players to record multiple double-digit rebounding games this season. Queen also added eight points and three assists against the Pioneers.
Top of the Mountain West
Several Rams rank among the top of Mountain West Conference in a number of categories. Sophomore forward Juanise Cornell is sixth in the MWC in field goal percentage (.500) and eighth in rebounding average (7.3 rebounds per game). Senior guard Sara Hunter is the lone Ram in the top 10 in the Mountain West Conference in scoring. Hunter's 13.7 points per game ranks ninth in the Mountain West. Hunter also ranks third in the conference in 3-pointers per game (2.71) and 11th in the MWC in 3-point field goal percentqage (.333), tying junior Kandy Beemer. Beemer also ranks 14th in the Mountain West in 3-point field goals made per game, with an average of 1.14. Junior Carine Remink, the Rams' block leader, has swatted eight shots in seven games this season, for an average of 1.14 blocks per game, 10th in the MWC. Reimink's 2.57 offensive rebounds per contest ranks 12th in the conference.
For the Record
Senior guard Sara Hunter has made quite an assault on the career record book at Colorado State. This past week, Hunter moved into 15th in career points and is now second all-time at Colorado State in career 3-pointers made. Her 186 3-pointers is second only to Colorado State great Becky Hammon, who knocked down 365 in her illustriuos career at CSU.
Looking Ahead
The Rams play the finale of a two-game home, playing host the the University of the Pacific on Tuesday evening. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. from Moby Arena. It will mark the first meeting between the Rams and Tigers in Fort Collins, and just the second meeting overall. Last season, Pacific defeated the Rams, 71-59, in Stockton, Calif.
