FORT COLLINS, Colo. - In its final tune-up before the regular season opener on Nov. 9, The Colorado State women's basketball team topped Colorado State - Pueblo, 58-42, on Saturday afternoon at Moby Arena.
Senior guard Sara Hunter led the Rams with 19 points, including a 5-for-9 performance from 3-point range. Hunter also dished out four assists and recorded three steals in 30 minutes.
The Rams entered halftime with a 29-26 lead behind 13 points from Hunter. Both teams had a tough time controlling the ball in the first half. The ThunderWolves and Rams each had 15 turnovers with the Rams forcing seven and the ThunderWolves forcing four.
Junior Britney Minor stole the CSU-Pueblo inbounds pass to open the second half and took it in for a layup to extend the Rams' lead to 31-26. The ThunderWolves answered with four-straight points to cut the Rams' lead to one, 31-30, before Colorado State blew the game open with a 17-0 run that spanned nearly six minutes, beginning with a free throw from freshman Lauren Young at the 17:08 mark and ending with a foul shot by junior Carine Reimink with 11:13 remaining in the game.
During that stretch, Hunter knocked down two of her five 3-pointers. Freshman forward Elle Queen added five points and sophomore Juanise Cornell added four to give the Rams a commanding 48-30 lead.
Rams head coach Jen Warden was pleased with the win. "I was impressed with the progress we made from Wednesday to Saturday but there is still room for improvement before the season gets under way," said Warden.
The Rams freshmen duo of Lauren Young and Elle Queen showed promise as each added eight points. Queen also led all players with seven rebounds. Cornell chipped in six points and six rebounds.
The Rams will start their season next Friday, Nov. 9, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, against the University of Northern Iowa. Tipoff is set for 4:45 p.m. MT.
