FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Senior Sara Hunter, juniors Kandy Beemer and Carine Reimink, and freshman Lauren Young all scored in double figures Tuesday as Colorado State (2-7) defeated the Pacific Tigers (3-4) at home in Moby Arena, 84-77.
Hunter got the Rams going as she had nine of the Rams' first 19 points as Colorado State led by four, 19-15, with 10:35 remaining in the first half. CSU never relinquished the lead as Beemer hit four of five threes in the last 7:15 to put the Rams ahead at halftime 43-31.
"It's great to see her get hot," said Hunter about Beemer. "She's got such a quick release; we have to get her the ball."
The Tigers came out of the locker room hot and scored the first 11 of 18 points and cut the Ram lead to nine, 49-40. However, Beemer got the Rams back on track after she knocked down a three and got fouled in the process. She hit the free throw and CSU never looked back.
"I feel like my teammates have confidence in me to shoot," said Beemer. "That's a big thing to have."
The Rams were able to extend their lead to 20 points (73-53) following a layup by Young at the 9:07 mark. However, the Tigers refused to go away and kept clawing at the Rams lead and were within five (77-72) at the 1:35 mark following a 3-pointer by Pacific guard Jake Kelly. Despite CSU not scoring a field goal and going 11-for-23 from the line in the final 9:07 in the game, the Rams were able to hang on and secure the victory. Before cooling down at the free-throw line, Colorado State had made 19 of 23 free-throw attempts in the game's first 31 minutes.
"I think it was a good win," said Head Coach Jen Warden. "Our players have put a lot of time outside of practice into developing their offensive games, and you could see that tonight."
Hunter was the leading scorer with 21, Beemer added 18 with a 5-for-8 performance shooting behind the arc, and Young and Reimink each added 10 points. Sophomore Juanise Cornell cleaned the glass for the Rams by picking up 13 rebounds, leading all players, and dished out five assists.
The Rams went 30-for-46 from the charity stripe, setting a season high for most free throws attempted, (previously 31 vs. Creighton) and most free throws made (20 vs. San Francisco).
Pacific had five players scoring in double figures: Andrea Swanson (11), Janae Young (15), Whitney Price (10), Kelly (18), and Karen Dawkins (13).
