CSU Tennis Unable to Overcome Limited Lineup

Lubbock, Texas-With three players out, the women's tennis team was defeated by the Red Raiders of Texas Tech, 7-0.
Due to illness, three players were held from competition Sunday. On Friday, senior Emily Kirchem was held from traveling due to an ear infection. Once the team arrived in Texas, and began warm-ups, sophomore Lauren Strasburger and freshman Kirsten Stople were diagnosed with the flu by a Texas Tech team doctor and were prevented from play.
Starting with doubles play, at No.1, Durham and Van der Drift defeated Pohjalainen and Tyler of CSU, 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, Wagley and Fankam beat Neal and Xu, 8-2. At. No. 3, Jackson and Potgieter defeated Satherlie and Seltsam, 8-5. After sweeping doubles, the Red Raiders were awarded one team point.
In singles play, the Rams dropped all six matches. At No. 1 singles, Samantha van der Drift beat Laura Neal, 7-5, 6-4. At No. 2, Hilary Tyler had match points, but ended up losing to Lakann Wagley, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. At No. 3 singles, Janet Durham defeated Anette Pohjalainen, 6-0, 7-5. At No. 4, Anne Sophie Fankam won against Greer Satherlie, 7-5, 6-2. At No. 5, Kerryn Potgieter beat Rui Xu, 6-1, 6-0. Finally, at No. 6 singles, Maria Jose Andres was awarded a team point having defeated Sarah Seltsam, 6-2, 6-1.
"We went in without three players, and that made it pretty tough," head coach Jon Messick commented. "We know we're good enough to beat these (nationally-ranked) teams, if we have our full lineup."
Next, the Rams will face #46 University of Denver at Miramont Lifestyle Fitness in Fort Collins, Colo. on March 3rd. The match is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. MT.
