Lloyd Wins Pentathlon, Breaks School Record

Colorado State senior Katie Lloyd broke the 4,000 point barrier for the first time in her career, winning her second consecutive Mountain West Conference Indoor Pentathlon and fourth-straight multi-title, breaking the school record with an Albuquerque Convention Center record 4,047 points. Juniors Emily Pearson and Tonya Cure also finished fourth and fifth, respectively, giving the Rams 19 team points after the first day of competition at the Mountain West Conference Championships. Senior Kevin Johnson also leads the men's heptathlon after day one.
Lloyd clocked an 8.79 to finish third in the 60 meter hurdles, then cleared 5-7.25 to win the high jump. She tied her personal best in the shot put with a throw of 39-7.75, then won the long jump portion of the pentathlon with a jump of 19-8.75 and finished the day running a personal best 2:28.87 in the 800 meters. Lloyd becomes the first student-athlete in Mountain West Conference history to win two indoor pentathlon titles and the first-ever to win four-straight multi titles. Lloyd's point total of 4,047 currently ranks third in the nation.
Johnson leads the heptathlon after the first day of competition with 3,167 points. Johnson began the morning with a personal best time, winning the 60 meters with in 7.06. He then leapt a personal best 23-4.75 to win the long jump, threw a personal best 43-1.5 to place fourth in the shot put and ended the day clearing a personal best 6-6 in the high jump to finish second. Johnson will run the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault and close the heptathlon with the 1,000 meters tomorrow.
Also in the pentathlon, Pearson started things off by running a personal best 8.87 in the 60 meter hurdles, then tied her personal best with a 5-6 clearance in the high jump and threw 36-10.5 in the shot put to move into second place. In the long jump, she had a distance of 17-6.75 and finished the day running a 2:30.50 in the 800 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships with 3,722 points.
Cure ran a 9.46 in the 60 hurdles, tied her career high by clearing 5-3.75 in the high jump, threw a personal best 33-3.25 in the shot put, jumped 16-11.25 in the long jump and ran a 2:25.39 in the 800 to end the competition with 3,469 points.
Freshman Kristen Kugler ran a personal best 9.94 in the hurdles, cleared a personal best 5-3.75 in the high jump, threw 31-10 in the shot put, jumped 16-5 in the long jump and won the first heat of the 800 meters, clocking in at 2:29.46 for 3,251 points and ninth place.
Freshman Sonni Russell began the day running a 9.93 in the hurdles, then cleared a personal best 5-7.25 in the high jump, threw a personal best 30-8.25 in the shot put, jumped 15-4.75 in the long jump and clocked a 2:46.67 in the 800 to finish with 3,055 points and 10th place.
Freshman Sarah Manuel finished in 13th place with 2,919 points. She ran a 9.63 in the hurdles, cleared 4-6.25 in the high jump, threw 32-7.75 in the shot put, jumped 15-7 in the long jump and ran a personal best 2:35.37 in the 800 meters.
Freshman Doug Dieker is currently in ninth place in the men's heptathlon with 2,553 points. He started the competition by running a 7.38 in the 60 meters, then jumped a personal best 20-6.25 in the long jump, threw 32-6.5 in the shot put and ended the day by clearing a personal best 6-1.25 in the high jump.
The qualifying rounds of the Mountain West Championship begin tomorrow. The heptathlon continues with the 60 meter hurdles at 10:00 a.m. and several field events, including the men's long jump and the women's weight throw begin at 1:00 p.m.
