The Colorado State (8-18, 3-11) Rams snapped a four game losing streak and earned their third Mountain West Conference victory with a 67-56 win over the visiting San Diego State Aztecs (12-12, 5-8) Thursday night in Moby Arena.
Freshman Emily Neal scored a game-high and a career-best 20 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor and connecting on all eight attempts from the free throw line while recording a team-high four assists.
After a sluggish first ten minutes of the game, the Aztecs gained a 15-11 lead on a Tamika Lipford lay-up with eight minutes left in the half, but that would be their last lead of the game as the Rams went on a 15-7 run heading into the break.
Junior guard Sara Hunter set the tone for the Rams in the second half with 12 points in the final period to finish with 19 on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor. Hunter also made three of her four attempts from beyond the arc to lead the Rams in three-point shooting.
Aztec guard Shannon Clay was the only SDSU player in double figures in scoring with 13 points in 13 minutes of play.
San Diego State kept it close by getting offensive rebounds and steals to pull within seven with 14:39 to play in the second half, but the Ram's defense proved to be too much as they limited the Aztecs to just 37 percent shooting from the floor and forced 16 turnovers.
Senior Marilyn Moulton helped out collecting 11 rebounds, scoring 10 points and recording two blocked shots for her fourth double-double of the year, freshman Juanise Cornell also had 10 boards to help CSU win the rebounding margin 40-36.
The Rams pushed the lead to 17 at 3:29 mark on a Moulton jumper assisted by Neal. CSU also shot an impressive 84 percent from the charity stripe, making all but three of their 19 attempts.
The Rams now travel to Laramie, Wyoming to take on the Wyoming Cowgirls on Sunday Feb. 25. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. MST. The game will be televised live on the mtn.
