Pearson Leads Cal Invitational After Day One

Colorado State junior Emily Pearson leads the Cal Invitational Heptathlon with 3,201 points after the first day of competition, while junior Tonya Cure is in 10th place and freshman Doug Dieker, competing in his first collegiate decathlon, is sixth in his section with 3,069 points.
Pearson opened the day running a 14.50 in the 100 meter hurdles. She then cleared a personal best 5-4.25 in the high jump, threw 37-6.5 in the shot put and ended the day running a personal best 24.89 in the 200 meters.
Cure ran a 15.20 in the hurdles to begin competition, then cleared 5-1.75 in the high jump, threw 32-9 in the shot put and closed the day running a 26.36 in the 200 meters.
Freshman Sonni Russell is in 26th place with 2,633 points. She ran a personal best 16.39 in the 100 hurdles, cleared 5-4.25 in the high jump, threw a personal best 32-7 in the shot put and ran a 27.51 in the 200 meters.
Fellow freshman Kristen Kugler is in 27th place with 2,254 points. She hit the eighth hurdle and finished with a time of 20.90, but rebounded to clear 5-3 in the high jump, throw a personal best 35-8.75 in the shot put and run a personal best 27.17 in the 200 meters.
Dieker opened the day with an 11.53 in the 100 meters. He then leaped 19-11.75 in the long jump, threw 33-2.5 in the shot put, cleared 5-9.25 in the high jump and ran a 54.21 in the 400 meters.
Dieker kicks off the competition tomorrow morning at 7:45 (Pacific), while the heptathlon begins at 10:30. The rest of the Colorado State track & field team will compete at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday.
