The Colorado State track and field team ventured out of the state of Colorado for the first time this season and the results were good.

 

Senior Janay DeLoach finished won the long jump with a leap of 20-11.25, which would be a new school record if the jump was not wind-aided. In the prelims, she jumped 20-3.75. Her mark is still an NCAA Regional qualifying mark. DeLoach also finished fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 11.90 and ninth in the 200 meters, clocking in at 24.74.

 

Senior Nicole Feest, running in her first event of the outdoor season, won the 3000 meters with a time of 9:48.34, while fellow senior Rob Watson also won the men's 3000 meters, clocking in at 8:13.97.

 

Junior Drew Morano qualified for the NCAA Regionals in both the 200 and 400 meters, running a 21.15 and 46.73, respectively. His 46.73 in the 400 meters is a personal best and the second-fastest time in school history behind the 46.40 by Deontrey Taylor in 1998.

 

In the 1500 meters, senior Danielle Korb was third at 4:29.27, while freshman Chantelle Dron was fourth at 4:30.47, junior Kirsten Anthony was fifth at 4:31.73, sophomore Kristen Hemphill was seventh at 4:34.74 and sophomore Heather Loseke was ninth at 4:36.45. All five posted career personal best times in the event.

 

Senior Justin Hazzard placed fifth in the 400 hurdles (52.58) and was eighth in the 110 hurdles (14.81), while sophomore Kyle Keeler was seventh and freshman Tim Sterrenberg was ninth in the 400 hurdles.

 

Drew Morano posted the second-fastest 400 in school history.


Senior Rae Backes tied for second in the high jump, clearing an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 5-8.75, which is the second highest bar clearance of her career, behind the 5-9.25 at the 2004 MWC Championship. Freshman Tanesha Johnson finished third in the triple jump with her leap of 39-3.  Freshman Ryan Friese took eighth place in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 46-9, which is good for 13th on the CSU descending order list all-time.

 

Senior Haley Hunt threw 152-10 for a personal best in the discus to finish fifth, while freshman Jennifer Mack was seventh and Jennifer Ugochukwu was ninth and also finished seventh in the shot put.

 

Junior Jason Schutz threw 186-5 in the discus to place third, while freshman Cameron Carter placed sixth at 172-8. Both threw further on Friday evening at the Mesa Classic. In the shot put, senior Nate Heyrman finished seventh with an NCAA regional throw of 56-2.5, while junior Magnus Lohse was ninth at 54-4.75 and senior Trey Eder placed 11th at 53-73.

 

Late Friday evening, senior Nate Heyrman threw 196-4 in the hammer to qualify for NCAA Regionals and finished sixth overall and fourth among collegians. Junior Stacey Poulos also finished sixth in the women's hammer.

 

At the Mesa Classic, hosted by Mesa Community College on Friday, Schutz finished third in the discus with an NCAA Regional qualifying throw of 188-3, which is a personal best throw and ranks sixth in school history. Carter also surpassed the regional qualifying mark, throwing a personal best 178-10. Hunt finished fourth in the women's discus with a personal best throw of 150-11 and was seventh in the hammer, while Poulos was eighth.

 

The lone competitor on the track last night was senior Ryan Kirkpatrick, who won the 5000 meters with a time of 14:59.03.

 

At the Colorado College Invitational in Colorado Springs on Saturday, sophomore Niomi Ridge was victorious in both the 100 and 400 meter hurdles, running a 14.54 and 1:05.85, respectively. Senior Denny Majerus won the men's 100 and 200 meters with times of 10.90 and 22.24, respectively and freshman Rob Marin won the 110 meter hurdles after clocking a 14.91.

 

Colorado State will host the annual Jack Christiansen Invitational on Saturday at the Jack Christiansen Track on the corner of College and Pitkin Avenues in Fort Collins. Events are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. with the men's hammer throw.
