On the Next Tee
The Colorado State women's golf team heads back to St. George, Utah, to compete in the Mountain West Conference Championships. This is the second consecutive tournament the Rams have played at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club. Three rounds of golf will be played, beginning with the first 18 on Thursday, April 19. Each day of the three-day event will feature its own round. All-conference recipients, Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year will be announced following the conclusion of the event. Live scoring of each round will be available at www.golfstat.com.
The Field
The MWC Championships is a showdown between the seven schools in the conference with women's golf programs. This year's event promises to be highly competitive, as three teams in the conference are in Golfweek's top-30 rankings. BYU (#17), Colorado State, New Mexico (#16), San Diego State, TCU (#27), UNLV and Wyoming will all be vying for the first place, which gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Rams Stumble at Dixie Classic
After posting a final-round score of 317, the Colorado State women's golf team slipped one place and finished 13th at the BYU Dixie Classic at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club. The Ram's had rounds of 317, 319 and 308, equaling a three-round score of 944. Kasey Claussen (76-77-80=233) finished tied for 32nd and Megan Chapman (81-79-78=238) moved up eight spots to share a tie for 50th. Amber Ward (83-73-83=239) finished tied for 52nd, Stefanie Ferguson (79-85-77=241) finished tied for 62nd, and Natalie Stone (89-79-82-250) tied for 72nd.
Host school BYU won the event, finishing 16 strokes ahead of second-place TCU. The University of Denver claimed third, while UC Irvine and Arizona finished with a share of forth place. After a final round score of 5 under par, Alison Walshe of Arizona claimed top individual honors.
Last Year's Championships
Two Rams on this year's squad finished in the top-20 at last year's Mountain West Championships, which were also held at Entrada at Snow Canyon. Chelsea Benton finished tied for 10th, while Amber Ward tied for 14th. As a team, the Rams struggled and finished in sixth place out of seven teams.
Deja Vu
This event is the fourth time in the past two years the Rams have played at Entrada at Snow Canyon in St. George, Utah. However, the team has not had much luck on the course and are only averaging 318 strokes per round.
A New Ram
Coach Angie Hopkins recently announced the signing of a new player for the 2007-08 season. Sarah Anast, a senior at Los Alamos High School (N.M.), has signed a National Letter of Intent to play with the Rams next year. Anast is a two-time district champion, a three-time all-district honoree and has garnered all-state honors twice. She was a third-place finisher in the New Mexico State Tournament as a junior and has won four tournaments in her fall season in 2006.
