Santa Cruz, Calif - Colorado State completed the first day of the WWPA Championships by going 1-1. The number nine seeded Rams earned the first upset of the tournament by defeating rivals number eight seed Sonoma State 11-7. The Rams then played the number one seed UC Davis and lost in a tough 16-5 loss.
In game one, the Rams and Sonoma St. battled to a 1-1 tie after the first period. Colorado State then put the game away by outscoring their opponents 9-3 in the second and third quarter.
Laurien White led all scorers with 4 goals and Shannon Kohl added 2 to help the Rams earn the victory. Goalkeeper Krystyna McCright had 6 saves in the game as well.
In the second game, top seed UC Davis led by two, 4-2, after the first two periods. UC Davis then outscored the Rams 8-1 in the third to take a commanding lead. Ostling, Kohl, Chambers, White and Quinn all had one goal. Krystyna McCright had four saves in the game.
The Rams (13-18) will play the number five seed CSU Bakersfield in game 12 of the tournament at 12:30 pm PT on Saturday.
