Pearson Leads After Day One

Colorado State junior Emily Pearson leads the Mountain West Conference Championship in the heptathlon after the first day of competition with a personal best 3,293 points.

 

Pearson leads the 12 member field after the first four events, while junior Tonya Cure is in sixth place with 2,878 points, freshman Kristen Kugler is in seventh with 2,778 points and freshman Sonni Russell is 10th with 2,755 points. Freshman Doug Dieker is the lone Ram in the decathlon and currently sits in eighth place after the first day with 3100 points.

 

Pearson opened the day by running a 14.07 in the 100 meter hurdles, which is also the sixth fastest time in Colorado State history and the fastest time ever run in a heptathlon by a Ram. She then cleared a personal best 5-7 in the high jump, threw a personal best 37-8.75 in the shot put and rounded out the day by running a 25.49 in the 200 meters. Pearson won the hurdles, high jump and 200 meters and was second in the shot put.

 

Cure began the day running a personal best time of 14.70 in the 100 hurdles. She then cleared 5-2.25 in the high jump, threw a personal best 33-8.5 in the shot put and ran a 26.70 in the 200 meters.

 

Kugler also ran a personal best time in the hurdles, clocking a 16.29. She then cleared a personal best 5-5.75 in the high jump, threw 34-9 in the shot put and closed the day by running 26.99 in the 200 meters.

 

Russell crossed the tape in a personal best time of 16.13 in the 100 hurdles, cleared 5-5.75 in the high jump, threw a personal best 33-8.5 in the shot put and ran a 27.24 in the 200 meters.

 

Dieker ran an 11.55 in the 100 meters, jumped 19-2.5 in the long jump, threw a personal best 33-6 in the shot put, cleared a personal best 5-9.75 in the high jump and rounded out the day by running a personal best 52.52 in the 400 meters.

 

Day two events begin Thursday, May 10, at Noon PT with the men's decathlon 110 meter hurdles, while the women's heptathlon long jump begins at 12:30 p.m. PT. After the conclusion of the multi-events tomorrow, the rest of the field will open competition on Friday.
