SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Freshman Elle Queen and senior Sara Hunter led Colorado State with 11 points each, and the Rams shot a season-best 46.5 percent from the field, but it was not enough, as Colorado State fell to the San Diego State Aztecs, 86-52, on Wednesday evening at Cox Arena.
The athletic Aztecs team forced the Rams into a season-worst 30 turnovers and outrebounded Colorado State by a 35-23 margin, which translated into 65 shot attempts (22 more than Colorado State) for the Aztecs, who knocked down 35 of those attempts for 53.8 percent.
San Diego State (12-7, 3-4 MWC) opened the game on an 18-4 run and Colorado State (2-17, 0-6 MWC) was unable to get closer than that 14-point margin for the remainder of the contest. An 11-4 Aztecs run over the final 5:46 of the first half, sent Colorado State into the locker room with a 43-22 deficit.
Colorado State opened the second half on a 10-4 run of their own to cut the SDSU lead to 15 points, 47-32, with 16 minutes left in the game, but that was as close as the Rams would get. San Diego State outscored the Rams 32-15 over the final 10 minutes of the game to walk away with the 86-52 victory.
Colorado State heads to Salt Lake City, Utah, for a Saturday matchup with the Utah Utes. The Utes are coming off of a 60-59 victory over nationally ranked Wyoming on Wednesday in Laramie, Wyo. Tipoff for the Rams and Utes is set for 3 p.m. MT from the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
